I use a combo of IrfanView and WinXP Paint. IrfanView to greyscale/brighten the sprite, and Paint to add a black/white "net" on it. Works really well.

I'm not sure if Windows 7 Paint is up to the task, though. That seems more "advanced" than the old paint, and consequently not nearly as useful.
