If you don't have an account, just leave the password field blank.
TGA: I very much doubt this has anything to do with an ActiveX control. As far as I know ActiveX only works in IE and in Chrome and I can run it from Firefox and opera as well. Plus I have pretty strict settings on ActiveX as I don't really like to use it, so I would have noticed.
The problem is that the signature for the chat applet has expired, so you get a prompt asking if you trust the applet anyway. (The signature expired somewhere in 2006 apparently.) I never had any problems using the Java-applet, but if you don't trust it then don't run it. Simple as that.
If you refuse to use any client that isn't web-based as well as refusing to use any other browser things might get a little tricky. http://java.freenode.net also has a Java-applet you can use but apparently that security certificate isn't valid either. (It hasn't been expired, but its validity couldn't be confirmed.)
And lastly I can't believe anyone would stick to IE for security reasons.
