Well I think it's a good idea to make a small d-mod first, but don't rush it. Even though it's small you should try teaching yourself quality assurance. Check for bugs, hardness oversights, depth que stuff, game balance, ... That's gonna make you feel a lot more confident to start on your bigger project afterwards^^
