Yeah, that sounds like the way to do it. I don't think that the current Dink engine is very useful for making Diablo-style gameplay. Yeah, sure, you can do a lot with DinkC hacks, but it'd never quite feel right.
Which doesn't mean that you shouldn't take a look at the Dink engine and see how stuff is done. Some things can be useful.
