I need permission from the jeweler to get into the maze, but I cannot find the cave where the gold is supposed to be. Is it by the mountains, or an underground opening? I've burned trees, and bombed rocks, but am having no luck. I cannot see any entrances in the mountins.

That's fine.

The rock is in a cave in the mountains. To get there do this:

Start out in the village and then go:
two screens south
one screen west
one screen north
two screens west
two screens south
one screen west
two screens north
two screens west
And then go north to the cave.

Thanks Metatarsal. Don't know why I didn't find it sooner. I was trying to complete a couple of the forest "tasks" at once--maybe that was the problem. I backed up a few saves and followed your directions and got it.

Hmm... Trying to complete a couple of the tasks at once shouldn't be a problem. (except if you forget what to do)
