I can not get to the first save. My Farmer keeps dying before the game is saved. I don't know what to do. There is no hint file that I know of. Just get me started, please.

if you are where I think you are, there is some snow (to the south west I think) that you can cut through by attacking it. I hope that helps, if you mean somewhere else, can u be more specific?

However, I found another kind of problem. The game does not seem to have a quit. When I wanted to go to dinner, I had to shut off my computer. Am I missing something , or are ws supposed to finish the game before we go to dinner?

It sounds like you are missing someting to me. If there wasn't a quit option in the menu (press escape) than you can quit by pressing ctrl and q together.
