Dink in GNU/Linux distros
I recently discussed with Seth and Dan, and presented the progress with FreeDink. I also mentioned that we could include Dink in various GNU/Linux distributions, provided the game data would be released under a free license.
Seth just agreed to release most of the game data under the zlib license! (This license is also used for NovaShell) I'm going to contact Debian and possibly Fedora about creating Dink packages (with FreeDink, the game data, and DFArc3). I expect this will bring new interests on the Dink scene
The only cons: most of the sounds/music in Dink were not made by RTsoft, and could not be released freely as well. So currently the game will be distributed with few sound files, but I'm much interested in finding replacements for them under free licenses (such as Creative Commons BY-SA, Art Libre, etc.)
EDIT: fix grammar

^^ What he said
But what do you mean by 'little sound files'? It would be odd playing with half the sounds missing.

I think he means few sound files. (few = smallness in number, little = smallness in size)
Also update manager wants to install dink-data, but it says there is a size mismatch.

I don't have sound, so I don't have to worry
I gave it some testing. Everything seems fine, except that during the gameplay, it sometimes switches suddenly to windowed mode, then back, after a while(seconds).

But there can be little candy left... I think "little" is also used on an undetermined amount, as is the case with "candy".

Thanks for the support
Someone: Can you retry? I tested with 2 different Debians as well as gNewSense (Ubuntu) and I couldn't reproduce the problem "size mismatch" issue. I had to reboot freedink.org at a point yesterday, maybe you just downloaded at the wrong time?
cypry: weird, does it happen when you press some keys combinations (lots at once) or is it just random?

I got it now, it worked after running apt-get update
DaVince: in that context you've turned candy into a singular, so I would read that as "not much candy". If it was number, it would be "not many candy" which doesn't make any sense. Maybe little can be used for number in loose English but it is better to use few to avoid ambiguousness.

Well, I remember that several times it happened while walking against hardness, but in that time, I think I only hold arrow keys.
Hmm... I'm sure I've seen sentences like "there was little <stuff> left" in my English textbooks though... Well, whatever, that's not the main point of discussion anyway.
I took it to mean few, and meant that it might be better to find the alternate sounds before distributing it.
Maybe list which sounds you need, so whoever wants to can help out?

Sparrowhawk: I started a page at http://www.freedink.org/doc/sounds/ where I listed all sounds and their use in the game, and which ones we need to find replacements for. Maybe it should be posted as a forum post?
Hi, firstly, good job Beuc, like the others said!
I recently started using Fedora, and I found Dink at the repositories and gave it a try (and liked it very much). Now I finished the main game I was going to try the d-mods.
Apparently, the fedora package doesn't come with Mystery Island. The support under linux is still not available, or is it some issue with those packaging regulations of Fedora? If it's the latter, is there any way to download it?
The game seems to be working very fine, but I haven't had the opportunity to use the DFArc. Plan to do it next week...
