I'd like to make a D-Mod but I need to learn everything from scratch as I have no experience in programming or anything of that sort. Does anyone have some useful tips & hints for a newbie?
Other than looking at that sticky thread and using the tutorials an' stuff, of course.

Basically, think of some simple stuff you would like to try out. Then think back at how stuff was done in the original Dink. The Dink .c source files are in your development folder. Follow the tutorials (also the one included in the development folder) and you should be able to start out.

And: Don't plan BIG from the start

Heya! If you haven't checked this topic, do it now! Download rudiment of scripting, read ALL OF IT! Then look through the source of any D-Mod(I preffer Mystery Island for newbies) and change a bit and see what happens instead! SimonK has made some great video tutorials, I recommend that you watch them carefully AFTER you have read Rudiment of Scripting and got an insight of DinkC.

Also download WinDinkEdit. Thats the original WinDinkEdit, there is another called WinDinkEdit Plus but I've allways used the original and it works great.

Also have in mind: Your first D-Mod is not a D-Mod, it's a TEST. Make a small D-Mod with some lousy scripts and see if it works, then you can start making a real one. Otherwise you'll end up like Skull and get very low score at your released D-Mod and therefore get a kinda crappy reputation in D-Modding... No offense Skull, it would be nice to see your D-Mods with a little higher standard.

final tip... Don't try to add new graphics 'til you got the primary skills in WinDinkEdit/scripting etc.

When you got the basic skills in scripting, focus all your energy in your story and the environment of the D-Mod and you'll end up with a D-Mod grade 8-9+

Good luck! Remember to ask us when you get stuck

And: Don't plan BIG from the start
I planned fairly large from the start (Frozen In Time), and it's working fine. Well, I didn't actually plan BIG. I made a couple of really crappy ones. Then I went on to this.

Sparrohawk, in the develop folder, you'll see the DinkC.chm thing, if you're ever in doubt, go to that before anything else. IN the search tab, type in what you're looking for, if it's not there, then come here for help and post something.

I would recommend downloading SimonK's video tutorials. Redink1's is pretty good too. I would also recommend downloading SimonK's PQ source. (After you've played PQ that is.) And if you're ever in doubt, gone to the DinkC.chm, come here, and no one can help you, (highly unlikely), then search in the PQ source. That should always be your last resort. And do read the rudiments of scripting. It's a very good tutorial. All 20 pages!

Remember you're unique, just like everyone else.
WinDinkEdit is good but I have had a couple of problems with it (hardness I think) so when I downloaded WinDinkEditplus they were gone, of course people say that about WDE+ too...

My first "D-mod" was just fiddling around with SimonK's video one which I later called Dragonz but I have long since left that one even though I still have that one with its horrible patchy scripts but what helped me was a blank speech template I made with all the basic stuff on it that I could just copy and paste, maybe I should fix it up and upload it...

Thanks all!
Last night I started reading through Rudiments of Scripting and doing it at the same time, happened to look at the clock later and it was 3.30am!

Marpro: This is what I meant by "that sticky thread", I just couldn't be bothered making the link

Didn't your parents come in and like, tell you to turn the dang thing off?
