I have read that there exist's a patch for Beginning of Evil. I have searched everywhere, even googled it, but with no luck. If anyone could post it, I'd be grateful. P.S. the reason, I put this here is because the discussion on this has gone on long enough!

I read it (I think), in a review of the dmod. I'm not positive on this, because I was going thru anything and everything to find information about B.O.E. If your looking also; then look thru the "downloads" section to the left. If you or anyone knows where it is, then please post it, so that I can download it. Thanx.

The patch only upgraded v1.00 to v1.01. And because v1.01 is available to download, it would not have any effect.

That sucks. Majicman emailed me an attachment (key-112.c) that is supposed to remove screen locks. I downloaded it, but when I went to install it, I got this message: "invalid format, or not supported". If you know how I can install the attachment, could you please give me a step by step instructions on how to do it (I'm green when it comes to stuff like that). OR, could you discuss it with Joeri (majicman) about making it a download-able patch? It would be great if you could! Thanx.

You don't have to double click on 'key-112.c'. Copy it to the story folder in your boe folder.

The game freezes? In the Dink game that often means that there's a corrupt MIDI file somewhere. Try deleting the MIDI file from the game that you think belongs to the well screen.

"P.S. the reason, I put this here is because the discussion on this has gone on long enough!"
Your reason should have been "because it's about this Dmod".

Your right on both ends. But, I don't understand HOW to do this?! I'm very new to the internet/computers, so if you can explain it: "STEP, BY STEP", then maybe I can figure it out?! Thanx for the message; hope to thank you for the AID!

Heh, he was joking and obviously quoting.

This is some stuff you need Dmod experience for, so you'll have to ask someone else to check if that person has the problem too, and fix that problem. That person can then tell you what to do.

Not me, I don't have either the Dmod or the patch.

If you downloaded the file in metatarasal's link above, you should have a folder called lckunlckscrn.zip on your computer (probably on the desktop).
Open that and you'll see a file called KEY-85.d in there.
Leave that for a second, now go to My Computer, open (double click) C:, then open Program Files, then open Dink Smallwood, then open dink, then open Story.
Drag KEY-85.d from the other window into the Story window, then let it go!
That's it. Now in the game if you press "U" it should unlock the screen.
The other file, KEY-76.d, will let you lock the screen by pressing "L" if you drag that in aswell if you want.
Hope this helps. I think it's what you're looking for. If not and you've done this then sorry! I don't see how it could affect MIDI's or make the game freeze.

He says the game freezes. The screen doesn't lock, it's not like you see anything happening either, no, the game simply freezes. This can sometimes be the cause of corrupt (damaged) MIDI music files.

If something IS happening, like everything keeps animating and working except you can't move or do a thing, then the problem lies somewhere else. You can close the app by pressing Alt+F4.
If you see stuff happening but you can't do a thing, Dink is frozen, probably because of some wrong script telling the game to make the player character 'freeze'. You'd need a script like Sparrowhawk's to fix that.

Mmmm, pizza.
I'm pretty sure it hasn't got anything to do with wrong MIDI files. From what I have gained from a previous post (the last few posts), is that one of the following two things happen (seemingly at random):

1) The knight gets stuck in the fountain, you're unable to hit him, the screen is locked and you're stuck with it.
2) The knight does not get stuck in the fountain, but the screen does not unlock.

Sounds like things could be solved with a lock/unlock screen, right?

Keep in mind we're talking to someone who's completely new in the marvellous world of computers, and he might have an alternative definition of "game freeze" than what we have.

@lance
For us the game freezing means that nothing is moving on the screen no matter what buttons you press(except Alt+F4). And when LOCKED appears on the 4 corners of the screen then its known as a screen lock.

1}>If you are getting a screen lock then press
1)F1 if you have Magicman's file i.e. key-112.d
OR
2)U if you have key-85.d reffered by Sparrowhawk.

It should unlock the screen.

2}>But if you are actually having a game freeze then only magicman can help.

What happens is: when I go to the fountain, words come up, but Dink freezes. He won't move--period. I have to use: ctrl.,alt.,+q to get out of the game. I tried many times, but get the same thing! Is there a fix for this? Also, the fountain is bubling, just dink doesn't move. I just looked at the Story folder for B.O.E., and key-112.d; key-85.d; and key-76.d are all in there.

Ah, okay. Sounds like a freeze(1) gone wrong in the knight or fountain script or something. They key-### scripts should be okay.

The problem is that I lost the original code, and also my tool to convert .d (unreadable) to .c (readable). Anyway, I managed to write my own tool to do the conversion, so I'll take a look at it tomorrow (or today, as the time over here is 02:37 am).

hey L. armstrong
IF dink can not move but can change the direction he's facing then it's most probably a hardness error{not game freeze}. magicumanu also said that knight also use to get stuck there so i think it is.
if you had the ultimate cheat<by G H & late T S> v2.01 then you wouldn't need to ask help here and wait so much.
Just warp out<on the same screen> and ready to go.

Yes, I know cos I was the one helping him that time. I had understood his problem by his last post- that he downloaded the v3.1 intead of v2.01, which(v3.1) required to attach a script to a sprite. So he couldn't make it work just by renaming.(OR he was renaming it incorrectly)

These files had similar names- ultcheat and ultimatecheat
Now(after g9 update) they are under the same name - Ultimate cheat
Even the author recommends the v2.01 for non developers.

I didn't tell him then bcos he started a new thread which made me think that he doesn't want me to answer.

Hey MagicuManu!! can you give me the converter .d to .c? How come nobody came to help when Lunacre needed it.

I downloaded the patch, and installed it. Dink is frozen , but nothing else; plus he won't turn directions. I looked in the "story" folder, and they're in there; BUT nothing happens when I try to use them?! This is the same problem I have while trying to use "the ultimate cheat" file. I was wondering if I should uninstall the main Dink Smallwood game, and then redownload and install it? As of now I am using Dink Smallwood v-1.08. Which version would I have the best chance of getting things back in order? ALSO, isn't there a version that already has "Dink front ends" included with it? I seem to remember that years ago, my brother downloaded the game from "GAME HIPPO", and "front ends" was part of the download. They no longer carry it though. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanx. P.S. I couldn't find "lckunlckscrn.zip" that Sparrowhawk was talking about?!

"DFArc 2.0" has taken the place of "Front end" making it better and including packaging/unpackaging DMod capabilities. "Front end" is pretty much obsolete now and that shouldn't make a difference on playing the DMod anyways.

@Harshit: It's not really a good idea just to have a .d -> .c converter just floating around out there. It really shouldn't be in just anyone's hands. DMod makers purposely put their scripts in .d format to keep people out of them. It is the DMod author's work and if they don't want you in it, they have their own reasons, and that should be respected.

Lance said that the game "freezes." Dink won't move or anything like that. If Dink is frozen then you cannot use any cheat to get you out of it. Magicman said he'd look into it so the only thing you can do is wait.

As I said b4-
"2}>But if you are actually having a game freeze then only magicman can help."
But, then I thought he could be mistaking a hardness error for a freeze.-
"IF dink can not move but can change the direction he's facing then it's most probably a hardness error{not game freeze}."

about d2c converter-
I dont want to keep it with me. If I lose the source of my dmod wich i need to modify. Then I can have somebody who has the converter, convert it and send the source it to me.
But 1st somebody has to respond when help is asked for.

rabidwolf9 posted the reason why I'm reluctant to just give my converter to any random person on the net. If I give it to you, other people will want to have it too, and I can't let such a thing happen.
