I have a 9 inch...
Paintbrush.
That was for your attention. Now here's the question.
What forms of art do you guys enjoy?
What artist(any kind, literature, musician, painter, sculptor, Seth, etc.) do you most admire?
What effect have these artists had on you?

Literature is the most pleasurable for me, though I do fall back in awe at some paintings (landscape with vibrant colours...especially mountains). Music is inspiring too.
No particular person has effected me tremendously, though perhaps "The Amber Spyglass" by Philip Pullman, and many of John Wyndham's books have influenced my taste for fantasy and storytelling.
And a nice topic, may I add!

Fantastic choice. Have you read the entire His Dark Materials trilogy? (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass)

The 9 inch. That can be art too.

None. Is that bad?
Oh, wait... musician is in the list too: Bob Marley! Real groovy music. That music is really of all times. And he's cool too. A shame he didn't live any longer so I could go to one of his concerts...
: What effect have these artists had on you?
When I hear reggae, I feel... at ease, and in a real tropical/exotic mood.
But then again, I grew up with that music. I heard it ever since I was a baby. My folks always played reggae - and danced on it too, yeah!!

Yeah, Bob Marley was a great man. No Woman No Cry is a great song. So is Smoke Two Joints. But you're right, his music is very soothing.

yeah, i read through phillip paulman, although my faiv writer would have to be someone like Sue Townsend. yeah i know, it's kinda childish, but i preferr a funny book to anything else. For all you britts out there, read the complete set of Adrian Mole diaries, they are very funny, esp. if you live in england.
But personally, I'm more of a music man myself, Ryan adame, Counting Crows, Counting Crows, Ben Harper, RadioHead, Powderfinger, Semisonic, Sherryl Crowe, Lou Reed, Van Morrison, et al. now if only i lived somewhere where these people played

Is that what it was called in America?? Over here in the good old UK it was called "The Northern Lights", which is IMHO a better name. But yes, I have read the books, and they are good!

Yes, though it wasn't always meant that way. I mean... his songs were all complaints against the system, discrimination, racism and such.
Not something you would be soothed by! But still, the music ìs good.

Counting Crows... Semisonic... Fine tastes in music, you have.
For my literary needs, I like... lots. Agatha Christie mysteries (Hercule Poirot!), Douglas Adams, H.G. Wells, Michael Chricton (dunno if that's how you spell it... the guy who wrote Jurassic Park, my favorite book ever), and my favorite book of the month is Johnny the Homicidal Maniac by Jhonen Vasquez. Actually, it's a comic book, but it's soooo good.
Artists: I love Vincent Van Gogh. I just like his style. I think the funny brush stroke stuff is way awesome. So there you have allikitten's cultural repertoire.

Uhm. I should post my own, so here goes.
I enjoy the studio arts. Picasso is incredible. He's my favorite visual artist. After him is Kurt Cobain, who is also an incredible painter.
Music. It is the water I swim in. If this isn't love I'll shoot myself. My tastes in music, in no particular order: jazz which has some of the best musicians ever; rock, which has some of the deepest music, and most enjoyable; and classical such as Beethoveen, which has a great mix of both.
Literature. What can I say? This may be the deepest one out of my list. From Invisible Man(not THE invisible Man), The Great Gatsby, Shakespeare, Poe...what can I say? I'm not worthy to describe them.
The artists that I most admire, and their effects one me. Hm..
Kurt Cobain - Nobody's perfect, and he knew this. Making him perfect, and overrated. He had no idols, only icons. Empathy. Love. Despair. I can relate to him more than any person that I've met. He introduced me to punk, and got me to play the guitar.
John Lennon - Too much to say on this guy. Way too much.
Picasso - Well, if I do go to college, it'll be for art. Thanks to him.
And probably Edgar Allan Poe is the most influential author to me. He could condense all the meanings of a book into a 5 page short story. That's genius.
There are more of course, but that's all for now.
And why hasn't anybody said movies? That's an art too you know.

This is going to sound really nasty, so I apologise in advance...
That comment is complete rubbish! You can relate to the idea's and stuff he loved, but you cannot relate to him more than anyone you have ever met, because you don't know what he was like. You have a preconception of what Kutr Cobain was APPARENTLY like, but without meeting him, speaking to him, and knowing him, you cannot possibly justify him being the person you are most connected with.
Sorry, but that's the way I see it.
: And why hasn't anybody said movies? That's an art too you know.
We're very obedient and just follow your guidelines.
But say movies, and I say Aliens! Though that wouldn't be considered much of an art film, I guess.

True, true. About the rubbish part. Not about the relating part. If you read somebody's biography, you'll know plenty about him/her. And I can relate to his songs too. But maybe not more than anybody else I've ever met. It's how much two people can relate between each other that matters, in life, ideas, and interests. Not whether or not you've met him or spoken with him. But a lot of that was B.S. because I was uh...drowsy then..

Yes. Great choices in Lennon and Poe. Lennon of course was much more than a music artist, as his art has influenced my own. But as far as music goes...stuff like Mind Games, Jeolous Guy, and Across the Universe...good stuff. He was also hated by many baby boomers for his anti-war mantra, but it took balls and he stuck to his guns. Revelution, of course, portrayed his thoughts perfectly on some of the violence being carried out by other anti-war hipocrits. Poe? You described him perfectly Rey.
Picasso besides being a dang good artist was also a really interesting man. Can't agree with your choice of Cobain, though I liked his music.
For writers, as lame as it sounds, I have always loved Homer, Joyce, Whitman and, ehem, Mario Puzo.
Movies...Jacobs Ladder, Clockwork Orange, The Meaning of Life, The Godfather (not 3), Citizen Cain, Schindler's List and Better off Dead.
Music...Velvet Underground, Mothers of Invention, Beatles, and The Clash have inspired me, and I think a little bit of all of them can be heard in the music I listen to today.
