I need help with NPC conversations and a strange wall problem.

I'm very new to this so don't hate me
1) How is it possible to have NPCs chat together like the two guys in the tavern in the original game and still be able to talk to you?
2) If I'm creating a room and have walls at the bottom of the screen, if Dink walks behind them, he pops up in FRONT of the walls. How is it possible to have the walls always be on top of the sprites behind them?

1) say_stop_npc
2) By default, Dink should appear behind walls. So, something funny is going on. Make sure:
a) the wall has hardness.
b) the wall isn't a background sprite.
Or, if you've messed with the dink.ini file entries for walls, then you're in a whole lot of trouble

I set the wall as a background sprite so that may be the problem
As for your first suggestion, I have yet to try it out but I'm sure you know what you're talking about. Thank you!

Well, maybe I'm just too stupid for my own good. Using Dinkedit, I thought I would fix the problem by changing the hardness type to 1 (monster sprite) from 0 (background sprite) and now not only does he walk in front of it, he walks THROUGH it. What am I doing wrong? Before I "fixed" the problem, the wall had hardness.
Hardness type should be 1, but sprite type should be 1 as well. It's probably 0 right now. (press 2 in DinkEdit to change)

Err, I love you in a stictly plutonic way, of course

Heh, plutonic . . . must mean that the love is radioactive. <makes mental note of 'platonic'>
