The Dink Network

Hiho everybody

Hey everybody, good to see the community is still going strong, and I think most of you are still here from when I left. Heh, just checked staff, dan, you'r never gonna leave, admit it. Anyway, hows it going here? Is vortex ok? I left around the time of hurricane katrina and I haven't really looked around the boards much.

My life's been pretty hectic.. Had into something of a breakdown and went kinda nuts.. but, i'm (almost) sort of sane now.

Anyways, how is it here? How active ha the place been? Any major new epic dmods? And also, did windamere ever come out?

I think this site really helped me a lot, dinkc was sort of a stepping stone for my programming skills. I went on to learn c, and I'm currently working on an online rpg type thing (more like tactics arena with rpg like elements and stuff) using flash and java. Only problem is, if I do finish it, where the hell am I gonna find enough money for servers, advertising, a domain etc. God i'm so sleepy. I havn't slept in about a week. Can't sleep anyway, might aswell just go onto bebo for a bit.. Cya's.

Btw, i'll be back in a bit, but i'm not staying.

Spacehoggy's back too! 'Not staying' my arse!

Windmere died a sad death, no recent epics that I can recall...haven't been paying enough attention, I still rule as much as ever.

Windemere was an effort to create a dink 2 game.

LOL... I was kind of uninterested to the Windemere Project, I thought it would be some advanced development source code tool that I would never be able to understand.

You were here when scourger was released, right? If not, you should play it. Welcome back!

Yes it is, but it's a big quest. Think about qfd, I or II. They are both smaller than the scourger, don't you think?

Yeah I'll give it a try, god, it's been so long since I played a dmod. I wonder if dink is even still on my computer..

'Not staying' my arse!

'Fraid I am going, I'll be active for a little while tho, but I probably will just forget like I did last time and dissapear pretty suddenly.

Ah, I forgot how nice everybody here is, why is it that some internet communitys completely rock, where as others blatantly wreak of piss and eggs. (metaphorical piss and eggs, you understand).

Heh, lemme guess, more aurguments about post whoring "a little/a lot" I guess.. Dinkkiller still here?

Also, Is the chat room up? I briefley took a look in there and i couldn't see much, but I might just need to tweak my computer.

EDIT: Lol, the irony of me taking the piss out of post whores when in fact I did a douple post myself. lol.

Hmm... I did think about making the last part slightly longer, that would make it an epic, but I don't really feel like doing that. Plus I won't have any time to make a DMOD anyway, my holiday job eats away a lot of time and I'm going on holiday next week. So it isn't very likely that would happen soon, but maybe when I don't feel like doing my current project...

DinkKiller left twice, then still stayed and now I think he is gone. Probably for just another month, when he returns AGAIN. I'd expect it from him.

Well, welcome back, even if I can't seem to remember you at all.

How is it we define epics, again? I forget...

A d-mod bigger than the original game? Is that right?

It's about gameplay time, right? more than a few hours I think.

"A D-mod about the same size of the original game."

I think that was it, but now days all the Epics are bigger than the original game by a huge amount. I think it was AGAE that took up two whole maps? While Dink Smallwood only took about 3/4 of a map mabye.

It's Legend of Tenjin that uses two (rather sparse) map files.

The original game really isn't that big, is it? Cloud Castle 2 is much bigger (especially in terms of play time), and that's only a quest!

I haven't really played through any Epics though, so I couldn't comment on how much bigger they are.

The original game is like 2-3 hours long if you have pÄlayed it before.

Romp - A small D-Mod that generally takes less than an hour to beat.
Quest - A medium D-Mod that takes an hour or few to complete.
Epic - A large D-Mod, about the size of the original game.
Weird - A non-traditional D-Mod, which isn't very RPG like.
Demo - A preview of an upcoming D-Mod.
Unfinished - A D-Mod that was released, but not fully completed.

Well, the reason cc2, init and other big quests aren't epics, although they take several hours to complete, is that they don't have several cities to visit. Still, I can't find a reason why scourger isn't an epic.

Daniel, there are clowns.
Actually, I think CC2 should be an Epic. I'm not really sure exactly why it was decided to be a Quest.

CC2 actualy IS an Epic. (It took me about 2 full days to complete! the original about 1!) It's only not displayed like that .

The Scourger is a quest because I submitted it as a quest. And I submitted it as a quest because I counted the screens and it had 538 screens while the original game had 644 screens. So I decided to call it a quest. But the original game has a lot of unused screens (like: water, a secret icecastle and some islands to the southeast that contribute really little to the length of the game). So you could call The Scourger an epic, but I don't know how long it takes the average player to play through The Sourger since I'm not really a reliable source for playing time. I estimated it at 3+ hours first time, but that's really a guess...

So maybe The Scourger should be an epic too, I just don't know...

I think it was labelled a Quest because the seriesiss to be..

Cloud Castle 1 (Romp)
Cloud Castle 2: Scarab (Quest)
Cloud Castle 3: War of the Ancients (Epic)

I alo recall something being said about it only being a Quest due to only having a single village. But I guess the plot and gameplay is more akin to an Epic than a Quest, even if it all centers around a single village "hub".

Somebody said in their review they lpayed it for 30 hours!

That's when you get when you want to know ALL about it. I went through several of things and I didn't even meet Thargo. I did got all six endings.

But wait a minute.. CC2 a Quest CC3 an Epic? How big must it be? Two map files

Really though, 30? That's a bit much for CC2.. I don't remember precisely how long it took me, since I don't have a save handy, but I'm thinking maybe 4 or 5?

Well, I very much doubt it will be two map files, but there is going to be a lot going on in the game. Cloud Castle 2 was packed with stuff, but this d-mod is going to be bursting with things to do.

If you want ro find Thargo, go to the crashed part of Cloud Castle (you go through it to get to the Oasis) and explore it when you have Alessa in your party. A certain fairy is waiting for you...
And whilst you have the game fresh in your mind, how about a review? The more reviews, the better CC3 will be. Honest.

EDIT: 30 is certainly a bit excessive, but I guess if you were to play the game through and see everything there was to see, it would possibly be pushing that sort of time. When you take into account the multiple dialogues with most NPC's, the dialogues you can have with party members that change through the game, the many endings and the Temple of the Ancients... it does start to make your head spin.
