Joe Satriani
Absolutely brilliant guitarist, and I could listen to his albums on end. In my opinion one of the most 'talented' guitarists in the industry today, notice not one of the 'best'.. because best is far more relative than talented. Discuss. (For those who don't know.. he did the Top Gun theme tune And much more smashing stuff, so don't judge him on that sole performance)
Also, I'd like to know what other guitarists people would recommend listening to. Focus on talent, not the repetitive heavy power chords many people these days associate with 'good guitaring'. Eric Clapton and others.. Any?

I think guitarists like Satriani, Vai, Johnson and Clapton are overrated. Yes, they're technically brilliant, but can they come up with good tunes? Not often, I'd say.
My favorite guitarists? Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead), Slash (Guns n' Roses), Kirk Hammet and James Hetfield (Metallica), Jimi Hendrix and Adam Jones (Tool). Ritchie Blackmore is an awesome player too, not only because of his efforts in Deep Purple, but also his entirely different style in Blackmore's Night.

I've always liked guitarists that were distinctive... like the Edge from U2... or Jack Johnson... or a bunch of other people I can't think of at the moment due to lack of sleep.
Billie Joe Armstrong. Ya know...from GREEN DAY! Also the dude from Red Hot Chili Peppers, System of a Down, Weezer, and many other awesome bands' guitarists.
I like Günter Schulz.
Can't think of anyone else offhand.

Who the heck is Günter Schulz?
Guitarist of KMFDM and Slick Idiot.
"Schulz displayed an impressive mastery of speed metal guitar skills and co-wrote many of KMFDM's songs from the 1990s. He also wrote and performed in various KMFDM side-projects, including two albums with Sascha Konietzko's Excessive Force and a solo LP by En Esch."

All my days are nice, so it does not apply to me.
I'm not too into my music, but from what I hear on the grapevine, James Hetfield is supposedly the best around at this time.
Mclaughlin
Al DiMeola
Pat Metheny
and Jan Garbarek (although he's not a guitarist )

I like Paul Gilbert. Not only because he's a brilliant guitarist, but he is also a funny guy.
Django Reinhardt. Hands down, the most amazing jazz/gypsy guitarist you'll ever hear. Especially since a few of his fingers were actually sewn together. Some kind of weird thing, but he can still move around the fretboard as well as anyone I've heard. Even me.
Oh, and Larry Lavonne from Primus. He's not wonderful, but he can pull off some of the weirdest sounding solos that fit in greatly with the tripping-on-acid feel that Primus has. Plus, he looks like he could totally be my doppleganger.
