Would anyone be interested in a Linux version of Dink Smallwood? Becuase I was thinking of porting it one day (when I gain more understand of C/C++). My research shows that it wouldn't be all that hard to do (especially if i used a program such as Qt).

I think someone tried this at some point, but it didn't work too well.

It would be cool though.

Well I certainly think it is an interesting and do able idea.

I've actually already done it and have it. I just never released it. That was back when Windemere was The Dink Project.

Really? Cool. Does it work well? And why haven't you released it? I reckon the Linux community would love it. Was it hard to do?

Does it work? Yes. Does it work well? Sorta. There are some crashes due to Seth's bad coding.

I didn't release it because I wanted the linux community to wait for Windemere.

It wasn't that hard, but it got really annoying after a while. The hardest part was getting through the shoots and craps.

Did you have to change much?

And as for Windemere... how is it coming along? Any idea when it will be completed?

Hmm... might it be viable to spend 20-40 hours to fix the crashes from Linux Dink and release it?

As it is, Windemere won't be backwards compatible, and it is unlikely that many D-Mods will be ported, so Linux Dink would fill a permanent need.

unfortunately from looking at windmere and its abilties i think it would be better if dink was closed and windmere became more dominant I just think that the windmere abilties are just so much more and dink will always be buggy and tough to make things work.

Well I'm sure that it could be fixed if someone could be bothered completely rewriting the engine almost... though i doubt anyone can be bothered.

Hey, I intend to write a Linux OS one day...so maybe it I would be in a position to rewrite a Linux version of the engine...
It should be an interesting task.

Maybe we could work on it together abd include it in your linux.

We could indeed...two heads are better than one after all. Mind you, if your head is the second head I think I would rather have no head .

Agreed

But then there are ~200 (maybe ~300 now?) D-Mods that can't be played in Windemere. Regardless of how old some of them are, they still represent a major part of the replayability of Dink. I also wouldn't count on tons of mods for Windemere.. the D-Modding community's really taken a dive in recent times, and I have my sincere doubt that Windemere would be enough to rekindle (?) desires to toil away.

Do I make sense? I've got a mind-numbing headache.

Better my head than yours... especially if you are the first head. And maybe in return i could help with your linux. That way you can get easy access to my non-dink software that i will release for windows and linux.

Ok then, sounds good. I do want to make a Linux OS and that means including ALOT of software....
And remember, I want to use Dink as an example of basic programming concepts, and my OS will implement this intention .

Well my Dink port would help you to do your dink project for linux too.

You can run Dink on a Linux system using the windos-binaries and the free emulator wine. I tested yesterday a little bit, and it seems to work very well. Have a look here, if you are interested:
