Goth Rock and Darkwave sort of blend together. Goth rock is more guitar and drums and darkwave is more electronic, sometimes and sort of. That doesn't help, but try listening to Sisters of Mercy and then Switchblade Symphony. Little difference there.

You seem to have a good knack for being able to categorize music by genre. However, I strongly, *strongly* disagree with the notion that Evanescence or Lacuna Coil could be "punk." If you want punk, I'll share with you some punk, and you will likely realize a very vast difference. 
I usually find putting music in anything beyond basic genres is lame.
Tal: I agree with you, but I don't know where else to put them. They're kind of on their own: semi-ethereal, semi-darkwave, semi-industrial. It is often very difficult to categorize music in genres because of the variety of music bands play; as with here, it depends which song you listen to.
Power metal, heavy metal... they two's my favorites, but I also like Irish, scotish, celtic, rock, japanese, fiddle, classical and some more... In fact, almost everything except pop, trance, techno, rave, hiphop and rap. 
rap can be good. listen to jay's rap and know what i mean.
Too hard to say. I'll cop out and just say punk.

Subgenres are handy when you want something a bit more specific than "rock." Unfortunately, it's generally too easy to confuse genres with one another. Pain in the ass, indeed.
