Technical challenge?
For the next contest, why not see who can best script a certain spell/feature which is difficult to implement?
Or maybe see who can come up with the best new spell, or something. You'd be sure to get plenty of entries.

I believe that just about all means [of technical chanllenges] have been exhausted. Perhaps it would be more feasible to wait until the release of Windemere?
Well of course it'd be better to wait for Windemere... maybe you could do a "what is the coolest thing I can do with Windemere?" contest. But I don't believe that everything that can be done has been done in DS.
Ah, there is a ton of new things that can be done with Dink, it just takes a creative implementation.
Try to make a dinkc based scientific calculator. No, really, try. With order of operations, ie BEDMAS, root and exponet funtions, and to get really funky, the sine, cosine and tangent functions.
Bonus points if you make it a graphing calculator.
PS. I've also had this idea for a dink-paint program floating in my mind, where you would superimpose pixels onto a loading dink image, and when you achieve the image you wanted, you could save it (through some tricky savefile manipulation) or take a screenshot and port it to paint, or whatever. I'm releasing this thought into the wild cause I know I can't program all that well. It wouldn't be terribly difficult to functions to it I believe. PM me here if you want more specifics.

Do you honestly believe that?! Really?

When Windemere comes out many new things will happen in every mod.
Still there is something nice about this challenge with Dink.exe. It also means making mods smaller that will not become oblsolete before they get finished.

Im just glad people arent using Dink as some sort of pornagraphy distribution and packaging system...seems like thats the only thing most people use the internet for!
There are plenty of ideas...just executing them is hard.

Ya, the technical challenge of Dink on Viagra and needing something enlarged just isn't the same....
Why not, for the next contest, simply limit the amount of screens used to 10x10? To make a fun d-mod with that, you'd need to use some pretty nifty scripting.
Not that nifty of course.
I mean, you'd have to do some pretty creative stuff to make your d-mod stand out, wouldn't you? And surely that's what the contests are about.

Or even 1 screen. That still leaves thousands of visions. Even tiles can be turned into sprites. Easy, until &vision forgets what &story is and you find Dink talking to a tree or sumthin'...
But then you'd have to create_sprite all of the sprites, leaving visions mostly worthless, because you're limited to 99 sprites per screen.
Just an idea. A challenge.
Its like putting your living room furniture in the hallway. Limits enforce innovation.

But, is your couch really that functional when bolted to the ceiling?
Yes, but to ill effect...
Its the lamp that hurts. (not that I'd know)
Or how about a time based mod. Pick a sunday morning, post a basic type of land, a type of quest, and what dmods can be borrowed from.
24 hrs later is the deadline.
No prep, just go!

Silly toilet humor and action aplenty will abound if that becomes the contest! At least that would be one everyone could take part in.

1 screen is just silly. With a 10 by 10 grid (or maybe a little smaller, 5X5 perhaps would be better) you would be restricted quite severely in terms of size, but it would be big enough to be manageable.
A small, sample vision scipr as an explanation to those who don't understand how vision works, and all would be set.
A contest with 24 hours to make a d-mod? Wouldn't be too bad an idea, if we didn't all live in different places around the world.

OK, now I'm obsessing. I'm thinking of making a dmod with 1 screen, no visions, and no pasted sprites. Can't do it with just one script and have it any good though. Hm...
I really like the 1-screen idea. Maybe we can do an informal contest?
Edit: The point is, a lot would have to be implicit. I.e., you'd hear about stuff happening off screen. Which would suck but be cool.

That would be like a greek comedy. 1 room, 2 or 3 central charecters, events unfold. That would be awesome for those with the gift to realy write.
But what I had in mind would seem like there are still many screens. Basicly I'd try to do with .c scripts what dink does internally.
I don't have the gift to write that good.
Lets think on what we'll build, but don't start yet until we see what the official contest is.
