Do we need to ask permission to use modified animal, monster, or other various graphics from other dmods If not, do we need to credit them or what is going on with that? I've seen copyright notices on them and couldn't understand if that was for the story in them, because obviously most things to do with dmods can\t be copyrighted due to it having an original author.

Generally it's seen as okay to just take things and giving credit is the gracious thing to do. If there's a copyright policy stated, respect that.

There's never been a robust system of rules about it, it's all just freeware fan stuff so it's been able to be like that. If there had been money involved in one way or another, I imagine things might look quite different.

This is an interesting question. It's been a common practice to use assets and scripts created by other people in D-Mods. In the majority of cases, the original authors are credited. TBH, while it might vary by person to person, I think not crediting people for their work is disrespectful towards them.

There are D-Mods that use assets from other games, which is for the majority of cases technically copyright infringement and illegal. But I've never heard cases that anybody ever complained regarding their material used in a D-Mod. After all, who cares about freeware mods developed for a very nieche 28-29 year old game?

Of course, there's the development category on this site's download section, where authors put their material for the very purpose of others using them for D-Mod development. Some are not the uploader's own work, sometimes it's copyright infringing, somtimes it's used in accordence to a proper license that allows using it under certain conditions.

Another matter is using assets derivitive of original Dink. Seth would pay attention if they were used in a license infringing way. But people are free to use them in their D-Mods, so that's not an issue.

As scratcher wrote above, the community never developed enforced guidelines or had a concensus on this stuff. The exception may be plagiarism. That's generally frowned upon, and not just here.

I say, just give credit where credit is due in your dmod release. I usually put a credits.txt file in my dmod directory along with the other dmod files.

Does Seth consider recoloring the original images so that other hair colors and skin tones with in the dmad infringement since it is a mod on the original game? Unfortunately altering the colors (batch editing) seems to make other places on the character get recolored, so they look strange, but is it enough of a modification to be considered ok? I wouldn't be claiming them as my own. I just wanted them to be consistent with the game because adding characters makes them look weird in comparison to the original game. I'm confused by the internet search I made to try and find out.

Oh, NOW YOU'VE DONE IT!
The original graphics are partly available as a zip archive from RTSoft in the files section under the "official" category with a reasonably permissive license that allows and encourages modification and reuse as per the included readme file.

I see I was confusing again. I meant that Seth would only have problem with using or modifying Dink graphics if it went against the license he released them under.

Using modified Dink graphics in a free D-Mod is not an issue for Seth or anyone here.

I guess the short answer is: if you are trying to modify the graphics from the original Dink game, and wonder about the license - find the download that yeoldetoast pointed out. The included readme will tell you the rest.

Edit:
If you want to use or modify graphics from a D-Mod, crediting the author is likely all you need to worry about.

Thanks. Uh my mind kind of id one that well thinks of things when other things are suggested so then I get confused by myself. On one hand thinking of all the possibilities is a good thing, but it also can leave you wondering about all the bad things that can happen.

Seth has released the full set of graphics with even more permissive license: https://www.codedojo.com/files/dink/dink_108_game_data.zip

I disagree.
I generally avoid this. The international court of justice has the means to hold you accountable for unauthorized use of assets.

Most fall into two license categories:
KMF - Kiss My Feet
WUMTS - warm up my toilet seat.

Normally it wouldn't be a problem for me to do those things to gain access to these assets, but dmoders tend to be all across the world, and paying for airplane tickets to do those things can get really expensive :/

EDIT
The only thing that can be used and redistributed freely in this community is Talporn.
But always check with site admins, just to be safe.
