David Beckham
Just have to see the answer to this... how many of the Americans on the DN have heard of David Beckham, almost certainly the most famous sporting name in the world.
A super-famous guy everywhere, bar the U.S.

Your mom busted in and said "What's that noise?"
Aww, Mom you're just jealous, it's David Beckham!

The most famous person in sports here is definitely Michael Jordan. I do watch some soccer occasionally, so I have heard of Beckham. Wasn't Pele an extremely famous soccer player too?
i dont know who the hell that is and i dont care.
Yeah, I thought Michael Jordan would be the "main man"in the U.S.
Pele was very famous...but that's largely because he was regarded as the best player ever. Beckham is a icon... they even did a took the image of Jesus on the cross, and put Beckham on the England flags cross! Controversial...

Well, Beckham hasn't died yet, so after he OD's and comes back to life courtesy of 3 adrenaline needles, maybe it wouldn't be controversial anymore.
I've heard of him, partially from "Bend it Like Beckham" (which I didn't actually see, but heard it was very good), and the girl from Pirates of the Carribean (also from Bend it Like Beckham) was on Jay Leno one night (I was waiting for Conan O'Brian, but then they didn't show Conan after Leno, and I was soooo angry about this, grr
) and was talking about him.
Short answer: yes, I have.

I agree, every night Leno finds new and mundane ways to be unfunny. Whereas simpletons of the like of Conan O'Brian are just regularly funny.
Great, now I've got the Beastie Boys in my head. Thanks, Tal.
For a Canuck's opinion, yes I've heard of David Beckham. Sometimes, though, I find it's more in reference to his marriage to Victoria/Posh Spice, almost like his soccer star status is an afterthought.
A DJ I heard on the radio recently was comparing David Letterman to Jay Leno. He said that Letterman was a genuinely funny guy, while Leno was simply a guy that told jokes. I thought that was kinda an interesting observation.

No nightly show is as consistently funny as Conan O'Brien except for maybe the Daily Show. No show that tries to be funny anyway.
Sports are boring. I prefer hunting!! It's the brutal bloody killing that makes hunting fun.
