The Dink Network

Which Dink version in 2021?

It's been another 5 years or so which means it was high time to dive into the ultimate nostalgia again. Which is the recommended Dink version to both play and develop d-mods these days? I noticed Seth updated Dink HD, is that a viable option now or still too buggy?

On a side note, I also looked into downloading the most anticipated metroidvania game of 2021, The Dark Avilan, but it appears that game has yet to release. I played the early access version for Windows XP in the year 20XX after backing it on Kick In The Nuts and had it on my wishlist, but no notifications yet. I believe the author was called RoyG or something, is that guy even still around?

I guess most of us here would recommend FreeDink. Dink HD's D-Mod compatibility is still not as good as other Dink versions, and Seth is no longer working on it. Robj is still around regularly, and apperently The Dark Avilan is still being worked on. I guess real life and the fact it seem Rob is working on other D-Mods too doesn't help.

Hi, I'm still here.

I'm still developing stuff.

I've released some development files... closest thing to a playable Dmod would be Push and Pull, but the quest is for demonstration purposes.

I do have a few dmods in the works, and I do actively work on them. All my attention is focused on one in particular atm.

I stick with FreeDink for playing. There's a tutorial on installing it in the Tutorials thread if need be, which should use the links on the DN site.
I forget what happened to FreeDink's development though, but somebody probably remembers.

Yes, definitely use FreeDink and follow ExDeathevn's Tutorial to set it up with best compatibility and to get Dfarc3 working correctly.

Heads up though, sometimes Dfarc3 still plays up though, even when copying it over the old Dfarc as ExDeaathevn showed in the video. If it takes forever to pack or unpack Dmods, it shouldn't do that. I haven't found a fix for it. Reverting to an older version of Dfarc fixed it for me though.

Beuc stopped maintaining FreeDink, and another maintainer has not been found

Thanks for the info guys! Freedink it is. I already tested some of my old projects and a couple of newer d-mods and they all seemed to work fine.

I was most surprised to die to simple boncas after all this time. Is it me getting old or just missing muscle memory?

Now that the dust has settled, what was it you were going to reveal to us in relation to the "A good reason to stop flaming" thread?

Oh I forgot about that.. it's actually too bad it didn't eventuate, the project he was talking about was an awesome idea.

Anyway. I guess I'll leave it up to him to reveal what it was, if he wants, since it wasn't my project.

(BTW it wouldn't have contested the DN like most people thought, or dilluted it.)

And also, I believe at one point Seth was helping Kyle with some of the stuff required to set it up, but I guess it never happened.

It wasn't a new Dink Network or anything that was supposed to take people away from this place. Instead it was something to bring people together again. I'll leave you with an introduction to the idea that was sent to a select few in order to try and get it off the ground:

The plan is to have a d-mod that is expanded on by the whole community. There will be a base d-mod, the root of the project, which introduces the setting and the base storyline. From here, the world will be expanded by any willing soul's d-mod addon. It would be played separately though, like an episode of a TV show. At the end of the "episode", the save file will be locked in and will be reused for the next episode. This way, throughout the whole project, you will continue building your own custom Dink through stats and abilities that will be provided. Then, after a while (say, 10 or more addon releases), I build the next part of the base storyline, bringing together the experiences Dink had in the previous addons and once again opening up the story to new addons. This will continue as long as there is interest. The addons should be around 10-30 minutes in length. This is so everyone, no matter how lazy they are, can participate.

But there's more. You'll have the possibility of uploading your savefile to a community site that I'm building, which will interpret your savefile and give you your own online profile where people can see your progress and look at your custom Dink build. It will also rank you on a ladder among the other players to see who is further ahead and who has achieved the most.

Ultimately, this is an attempt at bringing the community closer together and to revive the spark of creativity and combat laziness that is prevalent at this point in time.

There will be certain rules to adhere to while building an addon of course, such as a limit on how many bonuses you can give the player, which globals to use or not to use, how the abilities work, ... I'll provide all the documentation for this of course and if necessary I can make a video or have someone else do that!

Unfortunately something like this would no longer be feasible with today's DN population and the idea came to me at a time where I actually had no clue how to read a save file and build a site from it. The irony is today I do have those skills. Missed the mark by 11 years

Welcome back. I honestly didn't notice you were gone. Not because you're not a cool guy, but I guess because by DN standards, I consider anyone checking in every couple of years to still be a semi-active Dinker.

Alright, I think we should use cut out words from the DinkC reference to form the Ransome letter. Not sure if the book is still available to buy officially anymore, but I heard there's 1 person selling bootleg copies.

Unfortunately they don't take any usually accepted currencies. To get a copy you'll have to be honorable (about 18 points worth of honorable), journey across the Pacific Ocean to a remote island, and cut down the specific tree he needs to make the very paper he will infuse with the ancient knowledge of DinkC(using ink stolen out of Sabretouts inkjet printer while he was distracted making his sandwich).
