* A duck (headless or not)
* A creative way of lettering, such as drop shadows, lighting, and texturing.

The logo must not have the following:
* References to pr0n or nuditiy
* References to gang activity
* Guns
* Slang talk (Like Triggaz', as in WC's quote)

The logo may have the following:
* Swords
* Blood & Gore

The logo must be rendered:
* In a 640x480 -or- 800x600 resolution
* In either 24-bit or 32-bit color
* In either .PNG, .JPEG, or .PSD format

Please send all entries in an e-mail message to merlin -at- deru.com with the subject "Dink Logo". This contest ends on the 23rd of August, 2003 at 00:00 GMT (20:00 or 8:00 PM EST).

I will be placing all of the entries on an entry page which will be displayed on the Dink Project's webpage. Your name can either be with the picture, or be an anonymous (please state in the e-mail). If you do not state which in the e-mail, then it will be with your name.

To expect fruitful and professional logos in a contest as charity could be considered foolishness. The higher quality or greater quantity one end is, the other end will in turn balance with either quality or quantity, all in relative terms, as all statements are.

In other words, try giving a prize to the winner.

I think it shouldn't require a duck. I think it should require a hedgehog. Makes more sense that way.

yes because the dink source is covered in prickles?
how does a hedgehog make more sense!?!?!

Well, because Sonic the hedgehog was blue, and the water in Dink Smallwood was blue. Therefore, Hedgehogs = Dink Smallwood.

Exactly Alli. What do I have to do for these numbskulls? It's not rocket-science is it?

Also, herb boots are blue, and make you go really fast. Coincidence? I think not.

No you don't... pie rulesss!

Em... no offence but you're kinda making the Dink Project sound like... Half-Life2.. or... steak pie It just shouldn't be like that!

Yeah it IS a good thing people are getting together and cleaning the junk up though, a prize would be much more appealing.

By the way people. Don't go yodelling at me to modify instead of reply. My modifying privalage was taken away... With in red text

"You abused the modifying privilege, so you can't modify any messages any more. Sucka."

Gahahahahaha. That made my day

We're not discussing whether Sonic would survive in Dink's world, we're discussing the *obvious* link between hedgehogs and Dink Smallwood.
Hedgehogs represent Dink's struggle to go from a pig farmer to a hero... the spikes represent the various weapons he used, the cuteness (hedgehogs are cute!) represents his willingness to talk with cute girls, and the small fuzzy mammalness represents his eventual success over the notorious small fuzzy mammal called Seth.
I don't know about anybody else, but I'm impressed by the amount of BS I just put into this post.

But really, I have a serious question directed at Merlin... how big do you want the logo to be? Like in pixel size... because I don't think you actually want it to be 800x600 pixels, but I could be wrong.

EDIT: Changed all 1.25's to 1.333's. Thanks Phoenix - I can't add. Well, it was after 1:00.....

Okay, wow! That's a lot of posts. Now, to the questions!

1) Q: Why does it have to have a duck?
A: Because Dink is *the* duck paradise! (Well, sorta.) It's just gotta have the ducks. Plus, if you go to the Dink Project page, which you probably haven't, you will see, at the top of the page:

-- Redefining duck killing as a whole new experience!

Why? Because Dink... Well... Just go meditate on it, I'm sure you'll figure it out!

2) Q: Why no prize?
A: Well, I'm poor, duh! Unless, of course, you want to offer a prize, Morpheus. OH! Umm, how about the good feeling you have inside you when you do someting nice for somebody? Like a good samaritan! And, you get your name at the bottom of the page! Isn't that enough?? Sadly, samaritans don't exist anymore....

3) Q: What size?
A: Well, I'd prefer 640x480 or 800x600. Why? Well, images can easily be resized in that form. Because of the NTSC standard (which is better than PAL ) has defined the sizes of a 1:1.25 pixel ratio. This is the standard for TV screens all across the US! (And Japan, Canada, and Mexico of course!) Now, NTSC corp., or whatever their name is, can not modify the ratios for computer screens. However, you can adjust the ratio to fit your computer screen. From the TV (a 0.9) pixel size to a computer (1.0) pixel size, the 4:3 ratio is the same. This ratio is also somewhat, not fully, compatible with PAL. Now, the framerates between the two are different, but that's another story. I believe that SECAM came after PAL which came after NTSC. Well, the point of that is that a computer can convert any image to one of those formats (wait, no it wasn't...). It's just that a 4:3 format makes it much easier. Not that I'm planning to put this logo on TV

Now, I want you to take the following numbers and tell me the result:

640 divided by 480 Result: 1.333

800 divided by 600 Result: 1.333

960 divided by 720 Result: 1.333

1024 divided by 768 Result: 1.333

The result for all four is 1.333, or for those of you who have a quality graphing calculator, 4/3 .

So, what does this have to do with video, uhm, well, nothing really. It's just ease of future use. If you wish to choose a different format, just make sure it is 4:3 NTSC compatible.

Back from the ashes
No merlin, all equal to 1.33333~(infinity), which is 4/3.

And do take notice, that the PAL system, (which IS better than NTSC, we have more pixels in total ) has a resolution of 720x576, which, if you divide on one another, equals 1.25, while you have 720x480, which equals 1.5. And that's WAY out of the 4:3 definition. However, both PAL and NTSC seems like 4:3, because they simply "stretch" the lines a little, so it fits on the 4:3 shaped screen. Even so, PAL has a higher resolution.

Comparison between Pal and NTSC can be found here, since you seem so obsessed about it, and this article is objective, and favors neither, except that it rates the PAL resolution better. (As you see in the chart at the top).

Pal vs. NTSC

Another thing.. conversion from NTSC to PAL is rather unproblematic, but the other way around.. heh.. problems!

Conversion and progressive scan, and why PAL doesn't really need it!

Well, If you're gonna use a PAL format, you might as well use SECAM. Why?

Here

Also, PAL is more susceptible to flicker. Why? The refresh rate of PAL/SECAM video is lower than NTSC. PAL is 25fps/50Hz while NTSC is 29.97(or 30)fps/59.97(or 60)Hz. But, anyway, this isn't about video. I think you'll agree that 4:3 is the most widely-used and accepted format (Whether NTSC or PAL/SECAM), or 16:9 for widescreen formats as defined by Lucas Arts.

I don't really like that color either. But, white is fine because I can go in and change if after.

Have you not played Sonic? He can survive underwater by swallowing air-bubbles, and his boots are even better than herb boots.
