So yeah, Finland: the most Dinkish country bar the Netherlands. I'm going there this summer! Since there are so many Dinkers from Finland (though not sure if they still frequent the forums), I thought to seek some advice. Where to go? Where not to go? Where are all the hot girls? Are there really that many mosquitoes there?

Me and a close friend of mine are thinking about doing nature trip. Camping, canoeing, and all that jazz. Any advice on that? Much appreciated!

Where in Finland are you going to be? Somewhere around Helsinki/southern Finland? (I'm not too familiar with that area. Although I kind of suck at thinking of places to see, in general. )

Mosquitos can be a huge pain in the ass when you go out into nature. It's usually not that bad in high summer, but if it's closer to autumn or a colder-than-usual summer... Well, it's part of the authentic experience, I guess. (Buy bug spray and keep tent flaps closed)

You could also not go camping. Then you can avoid mosquitoes, itchy plants, shitty toilets, nothing to do at camp, lack of internet signal, totally pointless places to walk to which end up in wetness, aching, and general unpleasantness, heat, flat sleeping quarters that shouldn't ever be used, bear invasions, showers that are a hundred miles from your section, shower invasions, stepping on a mine, stepping on a leaf trap and becoming impaled on sharpened sticks, having to escape from giant rolling boulders, being mistaken for a deer and having a bunch of hicks carry you to their camp to make you their trophy to compensate for their tiny wieners, waking up covered in a fire ant colony, being kidnapped by a fire ant colony, being sacrificed by a fire ant colony, smokers (maybe just campfires, but not exactly safe anyways), obnoxious dinks singing unbearable songs while roasting sugar cylinders, tripping over the occasional trash, your tent being stolen by forest elves, a band of lumberjacks coming in and toppling the entire forest onto you, your tent being engulfed in flames, your campfire being engulfed in tent fabric, sudden rain making all of the above worse except the fire related ones since fire is kind and goes away so water can have a little fun, the ground opening up and absorbing the entire campsite, big foot punching you in the nads/vag, some careless fisher accidentally hooking you and launching you into the shallow river, a volcanic eruption, fire tornadoes, fire rain, acid rain, acid tornadoes, exploding tornadoes, exploding rain, slipping on mud, becoming dirty from stepping outside for 1 second, and not being able to ever leave when you notice your car got ducked by anything I listed.

We are not sure yet where we'll go exactly. We will probably be going to Helsinki for a day or two as well, but we mostly want to travel through the woods and the lakes and stuff. Any cool places you know we should visit?

I heard that summoning trolls is a popular Finnish activity.

It's kinda hard to say where you should visit, cause it all really depends on what you're personally interested in. I mean, Helsinki is great if you want to just hang around in a city and part-take in some cool activities. It's certainly the most tourist-attraction filled place (with museums, a nearby zoo, amusement parks, shops and marketplaces etc.), but I always try to remind people that there's more to Finland than just Helsinki, and that if you want to see the "real Finland" (for better or worse) you definitely need to travel outside of Helsinki. And there's just as much cool stuff out there. For example, there's lots of old castles to visit and stuff all around the country, but you'll have to travel quite a bit to get to some (closest to Helsinki is probably the one in Turku, which is about 200km away). One thing I personally enjoy doing is visit different churches in towns and on the countryside and old villages. There's tons of them and most are open during the summertime to visit as sort of museums. Some even have guides. So in case you're interested, that's a thing.

Travelling through woods is pretty much possible wherever you are here. There's barely a place in the dang country where you can't see a forest. But I'd suggest sticking to the south/south-west parts for walks in the woods. The forests in the mid-west especially I find are ugly and a bitch to have casual, relaxing walks through. And there's barely any lakes there.

Mosquitoes are unavoidable anywhere, but even more so in Lapland. I wouldn't say they're a huge pain, as Scratcher put it, in the south. But go in the woods and you'll definitely hear one buzzing in your ear most of the time. Other than that, we have your usual bees and horse-flies. Oh, and every time you've been in the forest, make sure to check your hair and clothes for deer flies, afterwards.

I have no idea what you are talking about, but then, I've only been an active (contributing and commenting) member for the last few years and for many years prior just lurked around here while downloading many dmods.
