Dink article in a Washington state newspaper. (Closed)
This week’s free game: “Dink Smallwood”
Are you a gamer? Do you like free things? Of course you do!
We here at the Tech Deck are just like you: poor gamers looking for cheap entertainment. And nothing's cheaper than cost-free gaming. Each week, we'll bring you a title (or two or three) you can legally play at home without plopping down a single dollar. If you see games you think we should be featuring on the blog, email us at dang@spokesman.com or kiph@spokesman.com.
Many games take their concept seriously, in order to draw in the player and keep them focused on the potential world-changing stakes at the center of the plot. "Dink Smallwood" is not that game. The action RPG, initially constructed by a three-member team, starts with the tragic death of your mother but branches out from there into some rather strange places. You can play a fully remastered version of the game by visiting developer Robinson Technologies website and looking for the download links about halfway down the page.

They also ask people to fill their page with comments about their experiences with Dink so hop to it if you're interested.

What's your favorite "Zelda" clone?
Because Dink is totally a Zelda clone. What's weird is that, anytime a game is like Zelda such as Starfox Adventures, it's actually not a clone at all since Zelda is usually pretty bad. Even Neopets did a better "Zelda" game.

THIS IS THE REBIRTHRTH OF DINK SMALLWOOD
Nah but for real, this guy did a pretty amazingly....bad job at describing the game. He covered absolutely nothing related to the game, and kept talking about it's creator's past and present.
DINK SMALLWOOD REVIEW FOR GAMERZ:
HEY GUYZ DO YOU LIKE ZELDUH CLONEZ? WELL BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW JACK SHIT ABOUT ANYTHING RELATED TO ROBINSON TECHNOLOGIES' GAMES, I'M JUST GONNA FILL UP SOME SPACE WITH SOME INFO ABOUT RT!
He was basically creating a ducking CV for Seth. I'm willing to overlook the "crappy zelda clone" thing because, let's face it, anyone who isn't informed about dink smallwood calls it a zelda clone.
BUT DUCKING GROWTOPIA A CLONE OF MINECRAFT?
UH YEAH, I SURE DO REMEMBER WHEN I USED TO PLANT TREES WHICH GREW BLOCKS IN MINECRAFT!
God that's such a bad "review"(if i can call it that) for a game -_-

Woah, I didn't even notice the Growtopia/Minecraft comparison.
Because, yes. In Minecraft, you can plant seeds. In Growtopia, the whole game is planting seeds.
I guess every single game is inspired by every single game, then? What if said game is inspired by a book or an acid trip or something? LSD: Dream Simulator sure as hell is not inspired by a game. It literally is based off someone's ducked up dreams.
There's not even gameplay in that.
EDIT: "Kip Hill is a reporter covering county government and federal courts."
Ooooooooohhh...

This Kip guy must be some dumb 40 yr old who knows nothing about games.
"UH, HEY BOB, I NEED SOME COOL SLANG TERMS TO CONNECT WITH GAMERS!"
"YEAH SURE MAN, JUST THROW SOME "ZELDA-CLONE" IN THERE, AND OH, DON'T FORGET TO CALL EVERYTHING A MINECRAFT CLONE! THAT'S WHAT MY 12 YR OLD SON DOES!"
"OH HELL YEAH, MAN! THANKS!"

Yeah, I saw that and thought it a bit strange that he's covering old games involving avunculicide. It might be worth telling them that RTsoft actually made the game in Oregon rather than Japan like the article seems to suggest.
Also the comments seem to have closed just after I posted the link here which means you may no longer comment on the article.

You have to make an account.
Love sites that do that. They must have tons of inactive accounts. c:

I'm glad everyone's living up tp our fervent and rabid cult status.

The Dead Dragon Corpse demands a sacrifice!
I can't believe I didn't get a mention.
Everyone and everything is a Zelda clone. Don't you see? Nintendo invented everything. We're all just ripoffs.
The description of the game on here does say, A humorous zelda-like isometric RPG. Ya know, in fairness of the "zelda-clone" argument.
Yeah, but there is a difference between zelda-like and zelda clone.
You can say: This apple is like a tomato.
But you can't say: This apple is a tomato clone.
There IS a difference

"Zelda-like" is bullshit too.
I think it's pretty cool that a game released in 1997 is still being mentioned in a magazine as "This week's free game" as late as february 2016.

Especially such a small, unknown indie game. Probably not unheard of, but damn near.

I dunno, I might be one of those people who love being viciously suckered out of their money a.k.a. taxpayers.

10 years ago I would have agreed. Nowadays, "free" usually means it's going to push ads up your arse.
Or sell your email address to spammers.
Or all of the above all at once.
I wish we could get up dink smallwood on some of the modern platforms with modding support. Wonder if seth plans to do anything with dink at all
let's buy dink and port it to modern platforms ourselves.
then we can cream the world.
then we can cream the world.
I think he meant Dink Smallwood with new features and scrpits. Since Dink Smallwood has a source code, why not have that? Sure there is FreeDink, but it doesn't bring anything new besides the fast forward key and being on Linux,iOS and Android.
Define 'modern platforms'.
uhhh...platforms that are currently being used by most people and are the newest platforms currently? so, colecovision, virtual boy, and the r-zone. and gizmondo.

Ah, those! I thought you meant Windows, on which Dink runs just fine.
This clarifies a lot.
This clarifies a lot.
One thing I do wish Seth would do is work a way to develop and play D-Mods independently, without the requirement of the original game. D-Mods being so tied to the original game 20 years after its release, holds too much potential down. I'm not sure how hard it would be to break D-Mods free from the original game, but I sure wish Seth would look into it. Or someone with a certain amount of knowledge and skill, like Beuc.
I know Yeoldetoast had that standalone D-Mod thing in the works quite some time ago, but not sure how well that worked.

People always said I would never be a part of anything big. But I guess I can say I'm a part of a "fervent cult", baby!!
This despite not being a flattering review might actually give the publicity needed to bring in some new players. I mean, I would play a game that's described as a "Zelda Clone" or anything which has "Fervent Cult" in the description

Still no progress on dink in the modern times sigh......
I still haven't quite understood what you meant by that.
Maybe some of us could make a fan remake to dink smallwood, like. A BIG ONE. With more cities, missions, quests, monsters, music. MAYBE DIFFERENT GRAPHICS OR DIFFERENT ENGINE..MAAAAYBE IT CAN BE 3D!!
I like the rustic feel of Dink's graphics
then lets use them still, but do it doom style and have them rotate based on how you're looking at them.
that's a shame this thread was closed.
You just renamed it to "Closed", didn't you? -_-
i found this Skyrim walkthrough thing with a neat Dink Smallwood reference in it
the game called Dink Smallwood did, though
It's lovely when the name of the game matches the name of the protagonist isn't it?
Yeah, just like The Legend Of Zelda, wait a minute..
