Oh, NOW YOU'VE DONE IT!
Did any of you people changed Windows 7/8 etc to Windows Ten? It's had the little icon there to "upgrade" for "free" next to the clock for some weeks now but I refuse to cave in.

I don't have that icon. Maybe something to do with how I don't trust Microsoft enough to even allow updates to happen.

Do you trust Microsoft with video games at all? Also my main PC uses Ubuntu.

I will probably upgrade sometime. If it's true what Microsoft are saying that Windows will be switching away from a major release model to an incremental release model than getting the upgrade is probably a good idea.

Having said that, I am not really in a rush to switch. Everything is working for me right now and switching to a newer version will always break some things, I'd like the system to have a little bit more maturity before I switch. Also, I haven't yet figured out how the license system works now, I'd really like to keep my current retail license because it would alow me to install on a new computer as well. I think that will be possible, but it doesn't hurt to wait a bit longer.

There's no rush. If you have a genuine Win7/8 copy now, you'll get Win10 for free when your download is ready. I'm not sure about the license system but there's always some available tricks for that.

And yes, this will be the definitive Windows release which will be continuously improved. It's slick and DX12.

That's actually a good policy right now since Microsoft is apparently backdating the Windows Ten Botnet spying features into 8.1/8 and 7 through Windows Update.

I looked forward to it - watched the little icon till it said go go go ... I gleefully updated it tried it our for two days and then promptly uninstalled it. You only have a month to rollback (sods) so do it fast if u dont like it guys. For me, well it messed with things too much - no way of stopping the privacy stealing and wouldnt run programmes i have used for a long time (no I am NOT buying more off you microsloth!!) It treats your computer like a phone wants to roam LOL and use your location and send itself messages on what you use and how etc - this is a first class virus inmho and I wont be installing it again - if i wanted a phone i would buy one (and have) my computer is a computer not a phone so i dont need the stupid phone look. 3 clicks to log in now - was none before loaded to start your password now u click a stupid computer icon in the corner of your screen click to input then input then click go gogo - thanks for the rsi as well ms So no yeold DONT DO EEETTTTT!! I was almost completely happy with Win95, save for the lack of USB support.

Much of what has come out since has been aimed at the average user (i.e. the non-technical masses) to offer them an easier experience in accomplishing what they think they want. This has come at the cost of having to rely on systems updates to (hopefully) prevent access to our data, and the gross reduction of our ability to tweak anything that is more technical than a mere creature comfort.

(Technical opinions not withstanding), I am not at all comfortable with having such a gaping hole into my data where I don't have much control over who can see it, but then again, any system connected to the internet has already accepted that their system will be accessible by default and the task then is to "try" to limit or mask what can be accessed. Using the cloud and wireless, though convenient, does widen the hole to a larger audience, but this is going off topic.

I largely agree that we are making a significant trade off when, and yes I said when, we migrate to Win10. We can resist but that will only leave us behind the curve. WinXP is already not supported, even though 70% of the US Navy still operates on a WinXP platform, and Win7 is soon reaching it's end of life phase. There is always Linux, but most people don't want to go to that much effort, just to use foolbook, play diabetescrush, or get ripped of on stealbay. In fact, as long as the porn is accessible, or some place to complain that it exists, most people are content.

Win10 will happen and really, the only thing that makes it a bad thing is the fact that we exist within a Capitalistic society. Sorry for the near article...thankfully, most of us aren't on dial up any more and I apologize to anyone who is, for my being wordy.

Everyone should get a pizza for free in each week.
Let's not forget that Windows 10 spies on us, even if we turn off stuff that send informations to em. Windows 7 and 8 also do that but only if we install some parts of it and they can be uninstalled.

As for linux, there is always Linux Mint which is pretty damn popular due to the fact it sticks to the classic style.

Yes, and it seems this has been their intention since they first licensed Spyglass for the first versions of IE, though they may have had some incentives to do so, beyond projecting future revenue streams.

If you are like me and like Windows 10 (or got it for free from somewhere) but care about privacy, there is a legitimate risk that information will be sent to Microsoft. Here's what I've done so far and so should you

* Win10 got an expansive section on privacy settings that you can manage. You should disable all those things like SmartScreen.
* Of course you can't be sure that Microsoft lets you tinker with every little detail. There's a program simply called Disable Windows 10 tracking. It can uninstall all those strange apps that comes with Win10 at once and block telemetry among other things. Use at your own risk and as always, you can't be sure that after doing this, no information will be sent.
* Don't use a Microsoft account for logging in.

I'm open to suggestions on how to reduce the risk as much as possible. I'm gaming a lot among other reasons so not using Windows is simply not an option.

I think, understanding the real nature of the problem, is a start.

We exist in a capitalistic society.

This implies 2 things;

1, It is expected that somebody should claim ownership of a thing and protect that ownership by requiring some form of reward for sharing it, likely in the form of currency or some other intrinsic value.

2, It should be expected that if additional benefit can be realized from having access to that thing, someone else will find a way to realize it.

I think the problem stems from the blur between determining who actually owns the information we store on our computing devices. There are many entities who may have a valid claim, based on prior court rulings, that tend to confuse the line of ownership significantly.

Imagine, the manufacturer of the hard-drive has installed firmware to operate that drive and determine how your data is stored and retrieved. The O/S uses software to; Format, Store, Retrieve, Display, and even Mangle your data. (In an effort to keep the list brief) any component that your data passes through which also relies on a specific design or "program", may have a claim to ownership of some part of your data, but not necessarily the specific information in it. For comparison, consider the Black Box in your car.

Truly, the only way to mostly ensure that your information is not stolen, is to "not publish it". For the technically inclined, there are mechanisms that can be employed to at least make it difficult to steal our information, but we then have to compare the value of the information against the cost of protecting it, including time spent.
