What do you think is the greatest first person shooter of all time?

The original DOOM game. Not only did it popularize FPS games, but it codified it as a genre. For a long time, all FPS games made afterward were called 'Doom-clones'.

Of course, there are a few other good FPS games out there.
Blood is an amazing one with a good story and great humor.
The Serpent Riders games (Heretic, Hexen 1&2, and Heretic 2, in order of release) tell a great story with wonderful storytelling. (Sadly, I have yet to play the last game.)
Duke Nukem 3D has some great b... err... visuals.
And as far as modern FPS goes, the 'Zombies' mode for Call of Duty is one of the few things I actually enjoy in a CoD game.

Wolfenstein 3D was a good one, but it didn't popularize the genre. It is one of the earlier examples, considered the Ur Example, even though there was an FPS before it.

Now that Kris brings that name back, that would be more of my favorite because of the story, should not of lost it. Wait, could a game like Mafia 2 count as a FPS, since you shoot most of the time, unless your that hardcore to beat all your enemies and live. Also could Minecraft count if they add guns?

You're absolutely right, Punisher. Doom totally wasn't responsible for popularizing the FPS. When you mention a "shooter" to the average person who doesn't know much about them, what comes to mind? That's right, Wolfenstein 3D.

Also, mentioning God in a silly tagline proves that someone is obsessively worshipful, and this is something worthy of confronting someone about and double-posting if they don't answer you in seven minutes.

But reasons why Goldeneye 007 is my favourite because it pretty much did the impossible and other.

-An exclusive FPS on a Nintendo console
-It was the first FPS on a console that wasnt a watered down PC game
-It was one of the first games that it requied you to reload your weapon(Except for mini arcade games)
-It was one of the first FPS that you had actual objectives
-It was the first to have split screen multiplayer
-A MOVIE BASED GAME FOR CRYING OUT LOUD
-It was one of the first to have Sniper rifles and be able to aim

As for me, my personal favorite FPS games are Doom 2, Quake 2, Half-Life 1, and Half-Life 2. I'm also a fan of games like Crysis and Prey.

Does Deus Ex count? I like that one because that's what I'm playing now.

C'mon, man, my post was dripping with sarcasm. Comparatively nobody has heard of Wolfenstein. There's wide public knowledge of Doom, though, because it drew a lot of attention in the 90s with the "violence in games" scare of the time (Also because it was extremely popular for its time).

I am actually not into FPSes at all. I'm terrible at them and don't enjoy them. The only exceptions are old ones, and I mean nothing past Quake II.

I'm not very familiar with the older Deus Ex games, but I'm pretty sure they are FPS games. Even Human Revolution which has a third person cover mechanic, it's still an FPS. I grew up with Doom and Half-Life, which is why FPS is one of my two favorite video game genres.

Actually, a third-person shooter game is a TPS. FPS and TPS are essentially the same, except for the point-of-view.

I find it sad i used to LOVE that game but had to stop playing because the motion made me totally ill hehe good times good times...
