Hello karan!

This comes up alot on the dink network, people who want's to create a game because they've got an idea but haven't got the time or patience to actually learn scripting.

The sad truth is that nobody will probably help you with this, because the few active developers left here have their own projects that they want to realize in the little spare time they have.

There are however two ways you could convince somebody to script for you

1) If you pay him/her
2) If you have the best idea ever (give us details!)

I personally think you should give scripting another go, because you'll love the rush you get when you actually make something work!
Check out Robj's tutorial series here
and meta's tutorial 'here (this one is how I learnt)

Oh, and feel free to ask questions on the forum about scripting if anything is unclear, that is something we are more than happy to help with!

Good luck!

Actually, I'd say the reason people usually can not help with DinkC is because there really is not much people can help you with. Just like in everything else, just practice practice practice, cause practicing makes perfect. Thankfully, creating D-Mods is rather easy to learn, but it is hard to master.

Other than that, I guess there's a few things you could check out, including.

Hmm... I was under the impression he had given up scripting all together and wanted somebody else to do all the scripting for his game.. But looking back at the original it could be both...

Hello Karan!

Don't be afraid to ask questions on the board. There's no such thing as a stupid question (you should have seen my questions back in 2006). Feel free to PM if you're completly stuck on a particular problem.

You could approach it this way: if you've played some dmods before, you could look into their scripts and see how other authors have done certain things, then copy and modify them for your game. It's how I started, I took some basic things like signposts and npcs and learnt how the basic say_stop etc. commands work. The stuff about brackets and conditions and variables will come naturally to you in time, and the guides iplaydink posted should also help I'm sure.

Try not to include any absurdly difficult scripts in first dmod, even if they seem neat... keep far away from the messier stuff like FIAT, since I promise trying to follow redink1's scripting will often just give you headaches

I disagree.
My little advice as a noob at scripting:

Don't start right away with creating a dmod. First download 'an introduction to Dmod making', and figure out some of the basic stuff on 3 or 4 screen sized map (that you'll create, nothing detailed, just for practise). When you figure how basic scripting works, then read 'the rudiments of scripting'. This should teach you how scripting generally works.

Then check the DinkC reference. It's a list of different commands and procedures you can use withing the game engine. There is a description of how they work, and what you can use them for. If you've figured the basics, using them will be no problem, because they work in the same way as those you've red about in tutorials.

Finally, download Notepad++ and install DinkC on it. It's really, and I mean REALLY, helpful when it comes to longer scripts. At least for me.

And you can always check out scripts of other people as synbi said.

I always wanted to create a dmod, but it is as others here say. Making a dmod really requires a lot of time.

Trust me Karan. As someone who has created tons of bad D-Mods in the past, this is not how you want to start out. First make a few test D-Mods that you have no intention to upload. Then make a few more serious D-Mods, which again, you probably shouldn't upload (sometimes these turn out so well, people upload them anyway). Then finally, after you've learned all the basic stuff, you can make a simple, small adventure with a little bit of story in it. After that, you should probably think to yourself a dozen times if it really is something you would like to play, if it was made by someone else. After you upload your first D-Mod, take all the negative things people (and you, too) saw in the game, and try to fix them in your next D-Mod. This way you'll always keep improving. God, how I wish I had done this back in the day.

Whatever you do, don't upload a D-Mod on the same day (or even the same week), as you start D-Modding. I'd say use at least half a year or maybe even a year learning the basics, and then start an actual project.

That requires us to keep downloading the new file. It's not really great idea.

Yeah, I don't think uploading a work-in-progress here is the best way either. It will take a while for the dmod to show up because somebody (sparrowhawk) has to approve it first, and people can write reviews for the dmod right away, which will piss you off after you improve it.

If you want feedback, I think the best way to go would be to ask a few guys to help and email it to them, or get webspace somewhere (like if you have a website, or use one of the hundreds of file hosts that are out there (which I don't like to use for original work because their license agreements usually say they're stealing your copyright (but that's an aside))), upload the dmod there, then link it to us here on the forum. This would also give you the ability to take the unfinished versions offline after you progress further along with the dmod.

Get Dropbox
Works as an alternative to finding a website to store stuff, just register, download and install it. Works like a regular Windows folder, throw it in the Public folder and it'll upload. Right click the file once it has a green tick and copy the pubic link, then send that to who you want to test.
