The Dink Network

After thinking of this, I'd like to hear your opinions of who really wants a new forum? Or sort of a side forum at the very least, to come to whenever you feel annoyed by the constant idiotism on this one? I obviously don't mean replacing this site, nor this forum. You would still have to get your D-Mods and news here. All it would be is a small, simple forum, to hang out and have fun when you feel things around here are getting desperate. And after a while, I think the troublemakers would be gone too for not bothering to fight amongst themselves.

The thing is, everyone here would probably be able to create a forum. But who has the guts to take on the challenge? I personally would do this, if you people want it, and everyone who wants the URL to the forum could send me a PM, and I would determine whether this person should have an access to the forum.

I thought about this after a few people brought it up. What do you think? If you want this, I can do it. But know that I am not trying by any means to replace this site, but rather have a place to cool off and have some sort of a Dink community available, when things here get heated.

So instead of a brand new forum, it would be more like a "Club for Actual Dinkers"?

EDIT: Also, it might be frowned upon if you alone had the power to decide who could get in or not (no offense). Would there be a group of people deciding?

I want it to replace this forum so that we are still one tight community, not two which will lead to both dying I think.

Of course, this SITE is still the one and only place for Dinkrelated files and this should remain so. A big sticky: "GO HERE FOR REAL FORUM" would work just fine.

We need it to have a good start though, if you know what I mean. We need to select the right free forum software that still allows some customizability to make it feel a little Dinkish? Like, nothing with too many ads for a free game forum And maybe a banana logo. And our avatars!

And I would say, accept everyone at first. Give people a last chance to change and then remove them if they are still a problem.

No Kyle. This will always be the one, true Dinker forum. I do not wish the other forum to become the "real deal". Rather, when you feel sad on this forum, like nobody is listening to you, and you miss the old days and the real Dinkers, you will have a place to come to instead of this dump. Most of the postings would still probably happen on this forum.

To answer Pillbug's question. I would have myself at first decide if the person is a troublemaker or not (fairly easy), then if someone who I feel would make the site a bad place to hang out, I would ask you guys for your opinions, but the ultimate decision would be made by me obviously. And I would obviously try to keep my own personal feelings out of the way.

However, this is a big deal. So I'm not gonna create a forum just based on two peoples' opinions, but I need a whole bunch of answers, so don't expect a new forum to pop out at this second.

So Kyle. You want it either 100% or 0%? Of course you can hang out in the other forum the whole time, and never ever again post here, if you want. But I doubt most people (even you) don't want, or aren't even able to do that. The main goal of the new forum would be to have a place to hang out and wait for things to get better here.

Alright. I spoke with Kyle and I came to the conclusion that we should at least give this new forum a try. We can always fall back to the safe nest that is TDN, in case people don't like the other forum. But yeah, if some more well-respected members of the site want to give it a try, I will create the new forum (it ain't gonna be visually nice, probably, but I would do my best).

So yeah. As I said, I think we should give it a go. If people don't like it, we can come back here. But trying is the most important thing, isn't it?

Who could be stupid enough to go to Skull's website where he would have complete power over everything? If someone disagreed with him, he'd delete their comment. If there was something or someone he didn't like, he'd get rid of it. He'd be worse than no admin, he'd be a power-man one. You're trying to start a new forum and bring all the members here to there? What's the point? You must be really ducking desperate for power. This is pretty much no different from when ashsashs tried to get us to his Dink Smallwood forum. I can't believe you'd actually try to create a new forum somewhere else where you would get the ultimate say in everything just because you can;t get power here. I'd seriously stay away from whatever crap he's pulling because he'd be a horrible, HORRIBLE webmaster. We already have this site, and I'm content with no webmaster than having a competing site with a complete moron as the admin who would delete anything he didn't like.

Think about it, Skull gets trampled on because he wants power, but everyone denies him it, so he makes a new forum so he can swim in his ego.

This is exactly what ashsashs did, people; He made a crappy little board for Dink Smallwood because he thought this one was crap, then he advertised it. This site has been around for over 10 years, so another brand new forum would be utterly pointless.

All we need is to contact Dan walma one more time and hopefully we can get this back on track completely. There's nothing more that should be said here. Once the staff are back in order, we can finally relax, but another forum would be pointless.

Even a jerk like you could end up running a forum; Being an administrator and actually acting like one would over time cause you to speak with humility elsewhere, as you gradually start to evolve. Even Skull could evolve if he so needs to, or if this idea ends up going ahead; Wether or not it will, both the idea and evolution, is the question. Correction, two questions...



Personally I support the idea on the grounds that certain spam threads which still appear and are posted by the new usuals are getting annoying to skip past. However I think a new forum would still need more than one sole administrator/mod to allow people in. Naturally the current staff here would qualify automatically

Well, people were pleading for a new forum only a couple of days ago. I simply stated that if people really want a new forum, then I will create it. But now people just seem to be too afraid when the actual moment is at hand.

But fine. If people don't want it, then I just wish you people the best Dinking moments in the future, even though they will suck because of this forum.

So very constructive. This is why the new forum was suggested in the first place. I read comments like this almost daily, strengthening my belief it's the right thing to do. Some people who are vehemently against it, blaming it on Skull's lust for power, have their habitat of free-to-flame fauna at risk, so of course they oppose it.

And I think Skull would actually be fair when it comes to moderating, perhaps too soft I do suggest there would be more than one moderator of course, to keep it democratic. I am 99% sure a better environment would lure passive Dinkers back out of their caves.

Yes, but we can not. The entire site is locked down, we can't change anything without Redink's help. Hence, the alternatives.

Another alternative is that we could organize some kind of effort to get redink's attention to ask him to either come back and fix things or give the keys to someone else.

Hey, this site has been around since 1998 and still going. It's very impressive and I think nothing could make me talk Dink in another forum than the official one.

Again, all those people you list would be there, but will have to abide by the new forum's rules or risk punishment/banning. Nobody will be banned before it even starts. This is why at first I suggested just replacing this forum completely, but I understand Skull's argument that if we'd do that, there would be no good place to fall back to and it might end up causing more harm than good. I don't understand what's so different about upgrading this forum to a version of vBulletin or something compared to having a new one, that's vBulletin driven. If Redink were still active here, I'm sure he would have upgraded the forum to something like that anyway by now.

Skull is not out for power here, he's out to conserve what's left to conserve. I'm still struck by Sharp coming here and leaving again the same minute because of all the negativity around here. But, seeing how this garners so little support and most of the members who constantly complain about the annoying people are silent in this thread, I'm tempted to just give up myself, in which case I don't know how I can keep up my positive attitude.

As a matter of fact, I contacted Redink1 on Facebook the other day and spoke with his girlfriend. and she said she'd let Dan get back to chat with me, but he didn't reply. Simply ignored.....

Absolution is right. The new forum would be pointless to him, cause he would never ever be accepted to that forum, for starting the trend of "I care for myself, not Dink". The new forum isn't my idea, it was asked by others, and I was at first against it. But then I realized something. In the past, whenever you would be sad or had a rough time, you could always come to TDN, maybe not even post anything, and it would still guarantee you to cheer up. However, now it just causes more problems and annoyance. Instead of having a good time and a laugh after a rough day, I'll have to deal with Skorn's bullcrap, for example, because of his desperate quest to be my arch enemy.

Then again, I could just right now go create a new forum and let everyone interested, and respected member, join it. And we could instantly start having a great time, instead of fighting in this thread, like in every other thread.

Exactly. You can find a fun forum anywhere. But there ain't any fun forums out there that are about Dink. All I am thinking of, is a Dink forum, where you could actually have fun, to go to until TDN gets better.

I think if you want another forum, yeoldetoast's idea of going to the RTSoft forum is good because it already exists, it has a Dink section, and AFAIK Seth hasn't abandoned it. It has a lot less activity than the DN, but that would change if DN people went there regularly. Some points against it: It has a more sterile-looking design, it doesn't have the DN's history and culture, it might stay inactive if not enough DN people post there, it won't have the users there you want to interact with if they decide not to go, and it isn't integrated with the big D-Mod library here the way this forum is. But for Skull's idea of a place to go from time to time, it could work.

Another option is to use yeoldetoast's ignore script. Then people can just stay here and still have an easier time than they have been. I would like to hear from people who don't like reading certain users' posts and know about the script but don't use it to ignore them. Why don't you?

BUT it's true that the script won't really solve the problem of driving away new or former members who want a nice place to hang out, like Sharp. The RTSoft forum idea wouldn't work. Why? I don't know. But the fact that we are talking about it as an idea, even though the forum is just a couple of clicks away, shows that it isn't working.

EDIT: We have 4 options as of now. The first and easiest being, we simply change our behavior. However, I feel that it wouldn't help. In fact, I feel that if things were as good as they were in 2001, people would still be complaining, simply cause they are not interested in Dink itself anymore (not enough real Dinkers). 2nd option, RTSoft forums. It's not a bad idea, but I doubt it would work. If we wanted to move to the RTSoft forum, we would have already done it. 3rd, new forum. Even though I suggested this, I really don't like the idea. It's the most likelier option to get things better right now, but still. Last option, contact Redink. I've looked into this, and I see he really ain't replying to anyone. He's as good as dead to us. The best option to get in touch with him would probably be to ask Seth if he can contact Dan.

Maybe people just don't think about it (I know I don't), and talking about it more would make them think about it enough to do it.

As for the website itself, with things being fixed that need to be I don't see a huge need for a major update... it would be a great shame if the DN started looking like any other generic forum with a download section. It has personality

What we need (after Skull's option 1, which ain't gonna happen ) is for Redink to come back for a little while, do an overhaul of whatever needs fixing, hand over power to someone(s) who's likely to stay around for a while (Striker/Sabre?) and then vanish again for good if he likes. As has been mentioned before, the main problem here is that there's no one really in control and even the nobles can't ban people, for example.

Oh and as a little side point, keep ghost posting! It's one of those things that makes this place different... how many times have I wanted to ask a question at some random helpful forum and given up because I have to do the whole rigmarole of creating an account with them just for one question...

I had a whole wall of text prepared. Then I realized, why bother. I give up. Sparrow speaks some wisdom which I why I respect him a lot, but it's still empty words as long as there is no action. But I won't be bothered anymore, I'm probably one of the handful of people who've actually tried to contact Redink.

I'm no longer feeling at home. I rarely smile anymore when I come here. I think I'll just take a break until the New Year and pray everything magically got better.

Too much history/information/files to loose here and there is nothing wrong with this site apart from some maintenance and a new active king cant fix. A few new powers bestowed and its all better. Why run off cause its not so nice here at the moment, are you going to do that all your life - hit a problem and instead of making an effort to fix it just leave? You know the problems follow anyway cause you havent changed right? Why not stay and make an effort to change this for the better.

All it takes is a bit of self control really: Stop posting stupid, inane, annoying, personal blogs and hateful comments, and if someone does, simply DONT BUMP IT BY ADDING TO IT - NONE, ZIP, NADA, NILL comments in threads you dont like and pretty sure the behaviour could modify. If you refuse to endorse those types of threads you dont like EVER (NOT ONCE) by adding to it it will just disappear off the bottom of the page. but I also am realistic that this wont happen because its human nature - so best we can do is concentrate on the positive stuff like Pilly did here instead of adding to the garbage pile.

Alright, apparently a variety of people HAVE contacted Redink personally, to no avail so far. I take back what I said about people not bothering. But the problem remains, HOW can we get through to Redink without making him feel he needs to commit to this again? I think we all understand he can't be expected to do everything himself again, since he's moved on. But we do need that access to admin features and the core of the site.

So let's close this up and brainstorm about how we can achieve this new goal instead

I agree with Kyle - lets build and not focus on the annoyances, in the old days we would have had people posting stuff we didn't care for - they gave up and moved on through lack of being responded to. Now there is a few that should have moved on but instead took up residence and THEY now control the vibes of this site (most unpleasant).

Actually Dinkulum, the RTSoft forums were established in 2002 or earlier, and you can view all the threads going back that far. Seth posts there all the time as well. I like it. He only stopped posting here after everyone was an asshole to him about Dink HD.

The outcome of this is fairly obvious; everyone will talk about what they'd like to accomplish but it will go nowhere. People like the state of these forums because they can post whatever crap they want. It's like 4chan but with no pictures but people are nice.

I'm friends with Tal on Xbox, and he's on every now and then. Maybe I'll bug him about a few things. Namely if he plans on coming back or if he can contact Dan.

The forum is divided because of ThePunisher and Skull. You can say I should blame myself and it's my fault and Skorn's fault and Banana's fault, but to tell the troof, ThePunisher's persistence has worn us down. Some people have left, some have truced with him, and some are at their wit's end and can't be bothered to fight with him anymore. Ignoring his threads never works: some idiot bumps it back up anyway, and if everyone writes it down on their hand because they don't trust their heads, that they WON'T bump it, he will bump it back or make half a dozen more of the same threads. When the staff delete his threads, he fills the first half of the forum with shoote. When they don't, he fills his threads with shoote and then he fills the first half of the forum with shoote. Pretty much none of us have a lot of Dinky stuff to talk about; the few times I tried, Skull started screaming that it was spam. I can't help but feel that Skull is a pretty clever troll indeed: act all responsible in front of newbies, call everyone a newbie, be so useful to the staff, label every fun thread as spam. That's what made the DN lose its fun element: every fun thread was met with cries of "SPAAAMMM!"

Sparrowhawk, the problem is that until we get Redink here, we'll still have to deal with all the troublemakers that visit TDN. And that's the real problem here. People won't bother to visit here much longer.

I agree, this forum (And just general dinkyness) will be gone forever( or perhaps a prolonged amount of time)in a few months a years. but making a New Forum wont help. Redink wont help (atm anyway). Its a thing we cant help so live with it guys.

Yeah, it's sad. The Dink Community is diseased and nobody wants to come close to a disased community, which will result in it dying. This disease could be cured, without harming anyone, making anyone feel sad and/or without banning anyone, if certain people would just change their behavior. If someone really feels bad for me setting the records straight with them, then yeah, I have caused bad feelings on this site. But I only set records straight with those who deserve it. So if I made someone feel bad, and he doesn't know why, it's usually the mirror he finds the answer from.

Well you'll find that when you get to some real problems in your life, that attitude will get you nowhere.

It is true that it was more talents here in 2001, but that is no reason for letting the trolls destroy this site.

Abandoning ship Kyle always has a right time. The great thing about it is a chance to start anew and do something to your liking. Let's use England as an example. When the puritans needed to escape religious persecution they went to the new world to m'e that looks a lot like abbandoning ship of course you are entitled to your own opinion and may call it whatever you'd like. They left England and settled Plymouth hell they even started a new tradition that ended up as a major holiday. I understand what it is you said Kyle and I did jump the gun a little which I tend to do. Maybe instead of abandoned ship we could put an endless parlay on a similar yet improved ship .

Then what's redink1 going to be paying for? He won't know that everyone has left for a different place, and will be wasting his money on an empty space.

He's paying for this site for our enjoyment, it's up to us to honor that and find a way to stop what's going on. The absolute best way to do so is to get redink1 back one more time to ban Predator, give the crown to someone like Sparrowhawk who will use it correctly, and then finally be able to leave without people pestering him.

Redink would awnser an email telling him he doesn't have to pay so quickly. Sadly that's just the way things are.

I like this forum, the most people here and ghost posting too, I first came here as an unsolid form.

I don't want a new forum. And I don't want this forum.

I've been here almost 6 years, I don't post much, I don't upload files, but I came here almost everyday to read people's posts, vote and comment the poll and lurk the news and download the newest mods.

Today, maybe I'm not a 'true Dinker' (if that concept actually exists), I only come and take look when everything else is gone, no games, no one on Facebook to chat and on...

IMO, the cure is to join the people here into a community again, may it be to get Redink's attention, or to lose troblemaker's attention, I mean, Dink Network was a community that was being kept alive by their own members no matter how many say it was going to die (and they were a lot), so... If DN is dieing now it is because we are killing it.
A 'King'? No, we need a bunch of 'admins', DN is not a Kingdom to be ruled and fought over. Why concentrate the 'power' to one person if everyone is responsible for the Dink Network?

Man, I talk too much and a lot of crap most of times, but this is my opinion, I'm not much a presence here but if this forum is closed, I'm out of here.

I was just joking about having a King. What I actually think this site needs is to NOT BE LIKE USENET. If you don't know what USENET newsgroups are like, here, try out this one via Google Groups: alt.slack. Notice how 99% of the posts are by trolls, and the other 1% are by related icky green-skinned races such as goblins, orcs, and ogres? That's because in USENET there aren't any admins and anybody can post whatever they want and get away with it, and it's literally impossible to moderate anything.

Most webs forums have admins, and if someone is trolling, the admins warn them by saying things like "Imma chargin mah lazer", and if they don't stop, they get banned. That's also how IRC channels work too, except in IRC it happens 100 times as fast. These forums should be less like USENET and moar liek IRC.

I did not like that fact that Soap died and price lived.
Soap should of live i relize IW made soap more the weaker guy in MW2 he was more of the 'ring leader' they just made price 10x more powerful and soap 10x weaker.

They should of gave you bonus reward for completing the game they did not

not that its up for debate or anything, but we do need a new king, Tal is a good king yes, but hes got a busy life and doesnt have much time for the DN.

The people i think would make great DN leaders (just thinking out loud here):

Sparrowhawk - hes a very sensible fellow and is good at settling disputes, and he doesnt have any enemies cuz everyone thinks he rocks, hes just an all-round nice guy.

Msdink - Shes just super nice, not aggresive at all unless they deserve it.
She tries to be as nice to everyone as much as she can which is very admirable, she has a long fuse so to speak.

Striker - just kidding. He'd probably just kill us all.

Pillbug - I really do think he'd make a good king, hes just a cool guy that finds getting involved in petty arguments isnt worth crap.

and dont think that "King Zeddexx" didnt cross my mind, i know that i would try my best, but i aint deluded enough to think anyone would ever let that happen.

Zeddexx that you did. I don't think a new king is going to be picked soon though they all do seem like they'd be up to the job. What about abandoning the whole leader idea in a whole. Instead we'd go for a small group of leaders maybe with three people. Each one could do something the other couldn't and one person (a sensible person who really no qualms with anyone Kyle,schnapper,msdink,etc) who would be in charge of picking and removing the people but only after having a majority approve the decision. Really complicated but having that one person does work as a fail save if we ever have the problem were stuck with again.

We need more Dinkers is what we need.

If you're not a staff member, or an otherwise long-standing member who is known to Dan, please don't send him messages on Facebook.

I doubt random people he's never heard of spamming messages saying "hey were r u man? we need u down the dink networks!" is likely to help much. Enough people are trying to get in touch with him as things stand - If he starts being flooded by messages, he may just start ignoring them all!

That makes sense. I'd also say that if people hear that staff members or people he knows are indeed trying to contact him, they'd probably feel better about not doing it themselves. I guess we can assume they are, but it would be better to see someone say it. So have staff people or other long-standing members he knows tried to contact him lately, or are they at least planning to?

I sent him an email about a month ago, and don't have Facebook/Xbox etc so can't contact him any other way.

Anyway, I don't think we need a new king as such. Just that whoever is around among the nobles should be able to do a bit more than they currently can in the admin section, such as banning or altering the partners list. It would be nice if Dan came back, did a general fixup, this and whatever bugs are lurking, and vanished back into the mists (or stayed around!).

As for my personal view.. I think there's two sides of this coin. I don't mind changing to a new forum with more admin control, but I don't really think we need to go that far. We just need to ignore senseless spam and obvious trolls and enjoy ourselves more like we used to (even if that seems like an impossible thing to do in most of the cases, lately).

I agree, but there are still some technical problems with the site that we need a webmaster for. For example, shevek still doesn't have an account.

Absolution is right. The new forum would be pointless to him, cause he would never ever be accepted to that forum, for starting the trend of "I care for myself, not Dink". The new forum isn't my idea, it was asked by others, and I was at first against it. But then I realized something. In the past, whenever you would be sad or had a rough time, you could always come to TDN, maybe not even post anything, and it would still guarantee you to cheer up. However, now it just causes more problems and annoyance. Instead of having a good time and a laugh after a rough day, I'll have to deal with Skorn's bullcrap, for example, because of his desperate quest to be my arch enemy.

Then again, I could just right now go create a new forum and let everyone interested, and respected member, join it. And we could instantly start having a great time, instead of fighting in this thread, like in every other thread.

I agree. But it's easier said than done. How can you enjoy any thread when every single of them turn into a flame war at one point or another. Mostly because those who don't like the user or the thread, cannot simply keep their nose out of it. As an example, not the best example, but still; If Predator posts a wrestling thread, some people just can't stay away. I mean, it's ridiculous. It's the same thing as if you went to YouTube and clicked on a wrestling video, even though you don't like the subject. Now, this is still fine, but when the staff actually start closing these threads, even if somebody might care for them, that's really the icing on the cake.

That was a bad example, but it applies to other threads and users too. Such as Skorn flaming me in every thread I make. Actually, I think I haven't made a single thread after he joined, where Skorn hasn't flamed me, except the ones in which I defended him.

If Skorn flames you, don't flame him or bite back. It's as simple as that, dude.

Yes, I have. Everybody who feeds the troll is by far worse than the troll, and will be banned with the troll. Not feeding the troll should guarantee you to be safe when the troll is banned. However, the problem is, nobody here is capable of banning the troll and nobody's able to ignore the troll forever.
