dmodding in Linux
I play Dink using Ubuntu, Is it worth while downloading it to Windows to use the editors or if i feel like trying to create sumthin' or is their Linux editors available? I can code a bit of C/C++ but relatively new to Linux
Nope. Mr Hampe is going to release a new editor soon. Until then you can use dinkedit from the command line to play around with the editor. Download the file Dmod Learning Stuff to learn how to use Dinkedit.

This question was asked over a year ago has a linux dink editor been realesed yet?
Because no one feels like making one. I feel like it's asking, "When is someone going to program me dinkedit to use on my first gen ipod shuffle? I mean, seriously guys, when is that coming out?"

Shevek's editor is supposed to be cross-platform.
It is. But unless you get your ipod to run Python, I don't think it'll work on that.

So if i was going to build a dmod then dinkedit would be the only way?
In the event the answer to the above is: Yes.
How would one go about making a "blank" dmod to start from?
I have looked in dinkedit however the lack of [key - legend] makes things painful.
i was going to follow the an introduction to dmod ... however i am running GNU/Linux Debian so the editor portion is rather useless ...
seen mention of a pydink however did not see anything like that in apt.

I think freedinkedit is the only way to make a dmod in lunix. PyDink as far as I know never got finished. Shevek never released it, if you send him a private message he might send you a version of it. I'm not sure if he ever made it able to produce a .dmod file though.
Does freedinkedit not have a "new button? I guess you could download a skeleton and just open that in freedinkedit instead. That way you'll have a blank dmod.

Alrighty, Thanks ... well perhaps better just to learn freedinkedit, it seemed powerful enough... just not very verbose about what is what
is there a cheat sheet somewhere for freedinkedit?

If you're familiar with C/C++, DinkC shouldn't be hard at all. Why would you need editor in linux anyway...
better question -

(Free)dinkedit isn't too bad. I prefer it strongly over Windinkedit.
I don't think anyone's written a comprehensive tutorial for using the editor, though, so that's a bit of a try & learn from your mistakes kind of experience. There's Tut1.txt in the Dink Smallwood\Develop\ folder, which can get you started.
I also made a list of all the keyboard shortcuts in Dinkedit a few years ago, but I never seem to have uploaded it on the Dink Network... I'll get back if I still have the file lying around somewhere.

Sigh.... let's not make this site a flame war site for the fanboys(or girls) of various operating systems.
But, since you asked...
10 Reasons to Use Linux Instead of Windows
12 Reasons Why Linux Is Better Than Windows 10
While my operating system loyalties were probably obvious to most members and visitors to the DN before this post, I (somewhat sheepishly) admit that I still keep a version of Windoze Vista around so that I can use WinDinkEdit2, though next time I get a computer, I may try WinDinkEdit2 on Wine.

Alright that's pretty cool. I didn't even know Linux was free. Still sticking to Windows tho. Just pirate it. EZ. OH SHIT I MEAN//UHHB BUY IT
@SlipDink
I'm not going to argue, Linux can be cool, but it can have some really freaky bugs, that I just can't bother to search more than two hours on how to fix em. For example:
wifi menu doesn't contain the field to type the wifi password, and after downloading the package again, it doesn't work.
Only on Chrome I can watch streamed online videos, other browsers can't do that, for the reasons that are beyond me. I've tried flash player, VLC plugins, all that crap... nada. I hate watching Talporn on Chrome, and I hate damned Chrome....
Switching between desktop environments??? OMG, only if they are installed at the very beginning.
Trying to install arch linux without wired connection? You better have the nerve...

LOL, well i have used linux for about 15 years, i have some c/c++ but it's limited... i know more bash it's more useful to me ..
Windows is junk ... i mean ..... I'll give credit for windows to be able to work even when it's loaded with viruses, however it's a hog and burns out your system.. ....
just as a note: under linux my cpu temp is an average of 30 C ... in windows it's an average of 55C...
and in my 15 years, only a few bugs have been noticed .... so i don't know what versions your trying to have it buggy ... but i have about 99% reliability from linux ... windows i tend to break 15 or so reinstalls a year...
and arch .... i have used ..... never had any issues ... it can be hard to find information sometimes... it's a matter of sticking with it, i think everyone here whom has made a dmod can appreciate that ...
All in all though both linux and windows have there strengths and weakness.... but i need to run an EEG .... and windows can't even do that on my laptop, linux can without issue ...
Aand ya wine will probably run it, but i don't have the disk space ... it need both archs installed .. 64-32
as for the editor, i have done some simple things ... charged hardness, attached scripts and such .... it's the drawing of the map that i am going to have the biggest issue with ... i think ..

Well, it means that you have more experience with PCs than I do. Just now, I've booted openSuse after a while, and guess what? After telling it to shut down, he just restarted and looped the load screen. Why? I've no Idea, I haven't touched any config file. After a while, it just happens. Tomorrow it might work normally. I've also put arch on virtual machine, but I can't enable wifi. Why? I've no idea, I installed it like I always do. Sometimes the wifi works, sometimes, it doesn't. I need a reliable PC, not a giant question mark on why the same procedure yields different results...

I've had the same shut down problem with windows. Sometimes i tell it to shut down and it restarts, until I actually have to hit restart in order for it to properly restart, so I can then shut it down. Maybe its a hardware problem.
little off toipc here now but
wifi ... maybe rfkill ...
type as root -> rfkill list
and see if it's blocked ... that is probably the issue ..
if so ..
rfkill unblock then the number for wifi ..

Ya it would be good to have one for sure ... i'll slowly make one as i play with things , but it mite be missing somethings, i'll post it when i think it's sorta done ... if one dose not make it here.
one thing that i find rather irritating is no search ? i mean ..... that would be super useful ... say to find a sprite that has a script attached, or find all sprites of a kind with no scripts attached ...

Yes, WinDinkEdit2 (which I assume was built in part from code from freedinkedit) has nothing in the way of search capabilities too.
If you are not the type of coder who makes copious comments in his/her code, you ought to start being one now for DinkC.

well the good is i do comment, it's a requirement for some of the things i do, already in the habit of that..
It will be the world construction that bugs me the most.. story is easy, and the coding will be as well, due to all the exceptional examples from other dmods..

Here's the list of the keyboard commands in Dinkedit: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1i86Q0eEnKdjtF6Db4U1hrw4f3CeL3c8D/view?usp=sharing
Download to view, since google drive shows the HTML document as plain text for some reason.

Thanks for compiling this and making it available to us.
Shouldn't this valuable list be added to the Dev file section of the DN somewhere?
