I have a serious Vista problem...
First of all I want to go on record by saying, I fcuking hate Windows Vista. I'm constantly finding new glitches here and there. With that out of the way, here's my problem. A long time ago, the Sound System was unrecognized as if Vista deleted it. Now just recently, the fcuking CD drive is gone! I can't open the tray, or even open it in "Computer". It's gone! I just finished recording the first part of my new LP series, and put it on a CD, and I can't do anything! What the hell is going on?!
Vista is going on. And I'm not even trying to be a biatch with this comment.
Vista worked very well for me when I used it before Windows 7. Must be the user at hand.
"What the hell is going on?!"

"What do you mean "Going on"?"

Vista was like a kitten to me for a bit. Cute, Fuzzy, and helpful with my personal research.

Apparently it seems that this is an age old fix for even XP systems. If you venture to the registry key above by doing the following steps:
1. Click on the start menu.
2. If this is a Vista machine in the search box type in “regedit” without the quotation marks.
3. Maximize the HKLM and then go ahead and browse until you reach the key listed above.
4. In the right panel you’ll see something along the lines of “UpperFilter” and “LowerFilter” you want to click on each “filter” key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.
5. Restart Windows.
6. Let me know if this works.

Replied on the thread in RandomFix.
If it's any help, here's the model information.
Open it manually by sticking a paperclip in the little hole on the front (if it has one) and see what happens if you put a CD in. Dunno if that'll help or anything
Does it show up in Device Manager? If so, try getting new drivers. If not, try scanning for new hardware and seeing if it'll find and install the thing.
Does it show up in the BIOS?

I took the tray's cap off and the tray is lodged in there. In only opens if it works.
As Sparrowhawk said, look for a little hole in the front of the CD drive, most have it and if you poke something in their you can open the disc tray without even turning the computer on.
There's nothing wrong with Vista.
Yeh, it isn't as bad as a lot of people think.
Actually, it's A LOT worse than people think! And THAT'S a fact!
I don't think Vista is absolutely *awful* (although I often poke fun at it), but it does treat every user as a braindead 80-year old, and there's less you can do about it than on XP.
It's ridiculous that you can't even do something as rudimentary as saving files where you want by default.

Has anyone noticed. When you open a program on Vista it says "If you have opened the program, press continue". Well, I just opened the goddarn program, why the hell must I confirm that I just opened it!?
That is just because Vista is uncertain about what it is doing, so it asks for confirmation if it is doing the right thing. It's self-confidence dropped because everyone says that Vista is bad.
Everyone says it's bad because it has a very bad self-confidence. How about that?
Disable User Account Control by clicking on your portrait on the start menu and disable it. First thing to do if you use Vista.
Then it is a vicious circle, poor Vista, never gonna be able and get some confidence. Good thing I don't use Vista.
Yeh, Windows 7 is the word now.
Windows 7 is nothing but the big brother of Windows Vista.
... Yaa ha ... after they emptied out the trash!
what the fact that vista has no self-esteem
