If you don't have an account, just leave the password field blank.
I don't think Vista is absolutely *awful* (although I often poke fun at it), but it does treat every user as a braindead 80-year old, and there's less you can do about it than on XP.
It's ridiculous that you can't even do something as rudimentary as saving files where you want by default.
