Hi, I've been trying to download Pilgram's Quest but for some reason the download cuts off about halfway. I have not been able to completely download it yet.

Is it possible to split it into 5mb segments and upload them for download? That way I - and anybody else unlucky enough to be on 56k - can download them in bursts, which minimise the chances of failure.

I'd also like to suggest that from now on any file greater than 8mb be split into 5mb segments.

How does that sound?

Can somebody please do that for Pilgram's Quest? I really want to play it.

How about using a download mangager, like Getright? I've been able to use it successfully with Gamespy/Fileplanet.

Ah, but I've tried.

Anyway, I've finally got it through some luck. It did stop midway through, like always, and I clicked Resume...first go got nothing. Second go got nothing.

But luckily, unlike the last times, it didn't restart from scratch. It caught on the third click. How lucky was that!

But I still think that it's a good idea - it did stop halfway through, after all. I don't know why. Probably because the FilePlanet servers have some problem with prolonged downloading (it took me 3 and a half hours to get it).

But what does everybody think of splitting DMODs into 5mb zip files to make it easier for us 56k folk to download?

That was the main point of this thread.

Not a good idea. Gamespy is clogged up as it is, doing the split 5MB download would just be too complicated and waste so much space, after all there are QUITE a few files bigger than 8MB as you suggested.

If you really want this though then I suggest set up a mirror site that does this, I would but I'm not that kind of helpful person

So I think it's a 99.9% chance that RedInk1 won't let this go ahead. Put simply then my answer is no, not a good idea.

But here's a suggestion, get a better connection, and if you can't.... um.... move

How does splitting it up clog Gamespy? It just adds more to the search options. Just add p1, p2, etc. to the end.

And there aren't that many files larger. Besides, it doesn't have to be 5mb. It could be 10 mb segments.

How do you set up a mirror site that supports resuming?

I d/l Pilgrims Quest in 3.5 hours on a 56K and I have MSN as my ISP.

The point is it worked well with me and I don't use download resumer b/c I don't know which one is the best and/or I rarely get disconnected. You just have to wait and be patient.

BTW I find no problems in d/l files from gamespy except if it is really busy and I have to wait.

I tried winacing PQ and it was only 32MB. Winace is awesome b/c someone made a morrowind plugin that has new clothing textures in 3d max and compressed it from 13MB to less than 2 MB. I think people should start winacing their files b/c it has the best compression on bitmaps but then not everybody has it I guess.

Actually I suggested this earlier, both WinAce and WinRar can kick the crap out of the zip format.

Agreed, but I had a problem with RAR - Geocities just don't accept it for my site. So I had to make a self-extracting RAR archive and then ZIP it to trick the Geocities into accepting it
