Well, you could make a dollar bill anywhere, but more and more could lead to inflation, which would cause that amount of money to become lesser in value.

That's what I always figured. But I was told something about inflation as Krisknox said. US currency it's backed up by gold, and well I don't really understand economics. We don't physically buy things with gold nuggets or coins, so I don't see why gold should be involved at all...just have the dollars and cents as is.
Edit- I do think Striker's right too. A dollar will always be a dollar, but things would cost more if there was inflation of money, as people would be able to spend more. If I'm understanding correctly.

Well if you couple the value of your currency to gold you know that the currency will keep it's value because you can't magically create more gold. Unless you happen to own the philosopher's stone. So a government can't issue more money than they have in gold which makes the currency reliable.
