If you don't have an account, just leave the password field blank.
For the modify button to show up you have to be logged in, so if you only log in when you post you won't see it.
As for your other questions I can't help much! You do need to go down the blue stairs. Btw Lunacre, the stairs looked nice but they were jumping up and down when I played it!
