My hobby for the past year has been speedrunning different games. I've produced movies of quick playthroughs of most of Commander Keen games and a Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project run is in progress. I firstt tried Dink back in 2000 while searching for fun freeware games but it didn't catch my eye back then. Now I when I was thinking of an RPG to speedrun, this was one of my ideas.
Now I played through the game for the first time, exploring and such and beat the game in a little less than 8 hours. Now I'm wondering what would be essential to completing the game as fast as possible?
As I see it, the only really hard part of the game would be Darklands, which can prove to be near impossible without a proper planning and character build.
My initial plan would be to get the coins for Herb Boots as soon as possible, making travelling a heck of a lot faster and maneuvering during battles a lot easier.
For speed purposes, I'm wondering if it would be necessary to kill every thing on the planet for expierence or just the things that drop the badly needed gold for Bow?
Another thing then which would need some planning would be how to spend the gold, more specifically - what weapon(s) to buy. Which leads to the other choice - where to spend all the stat points from levelups? As I see it, the most obvious choice would be Magic, because I REALLY need spells to regenerate FAST. Even with as much Magic as possible, Hellfire still is regenerating too slow for comfort and Fireballs don't scratch a thing starting from EOTW. There I need to choose wether to buy as good sword as my gold stock allows, or to invest in a better bow than the first one. I figured that even the basic bow deals considerable damage with Power Shots so maybe I should trade the awfully long powerlevelling for gold to considerably harder and longer battles.
Also, I figured I should pick up if not all, then most of the hidden life increase and stat increase powerups, since it takes little time to reach any place in the world with the Herb Boots, and will ease the game greatly.
So, in conclusion my initial plan is something like this:
- Get Herb Boots as soon as I have the gold
- Mostly head for enemies that drop gold
- Spend all levelup points in Magic for faster regeneration and more resistance
- Pick up all life powerups and stat potions, maybe minus some in Edge of the World. Not sure yet
- Do not spend a coin in melee weapons, fists are pretty good alone with Herb Boots
- Get the best bow I can afford without intentionally turning back powerkilling enemies for money
- Buy Hellfire
- Spend excess gold (if any) on elexirs
- Pray for a lot of Full-Health restore drops from monsters in Darklands
I'm mostly here to ask for your expierences, help, suggestions, tips, anything that could help me with my project. Is there any sequence breaking possible? Any useful glitches or such? My aim currently is about under 2 hours for beating the game, might be way off.
