If you don't have an account, just leave the password field blank.
You'd be able to read windows, as it's read during the boot process, and before windows even starts. So if data cd's aren't being read during the boot process, you have problems above my level of ideas.
I'm going to assume that you haven't installed anything recently, and that your virus scanner is updated, as well as your copy of adaware.
Random thoughts:
Maybe it's the file association table?
Is it an audio program, like winamp?
Have you tried a boot disk?
How many processes are running on this lappy at startup?
Do you have any sort of CD 'helper' program, above and beyond windows explorer?
Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling the drivers?
