I'd say you found a hardness bug that let you off one screen and onto another one... or maybe I got the variables screwed up... hmmm which screen were you on when you walked outside it?

EDIT: hmmm, I see that the Fairy Nuff booth script and stuff are visible before Roland is found - there is a blocker to the island this is one which is controlled by &story variable - so if you get around the blocker (by a hardness bug) then yes you can meet the Fairy before you've rescued the baby. Opps, I shouldn't have relied solely on the blocker....
