Is dreaming not intrinsically linked (or so they believe) with REM sleep? Which is the most important part of sleep for "recharging", as it were.

No. Dreaming can occur at any time during the night, usually during NREM and REM stages of sleep. NREM dreams are lighter and similar to daydreaming. REM dreams are where nightmares and heavier dreams happen.

And as for "recharging", that is only partially true. REM is the most important part of sleep, and it takes about two and a half hours to pass through the other four stages of sleep. However, say you wanted to take a nap. If you were to awaken from NREM stages of sleep (delta and theta), you would feel groggy. Time spent in REM is little during the first 4 hours, but gradually increases through the night. This is why you should either nap for 15 minutes, or for 2.5 hours.

As for dreaming in *color* and no color (we don't dream in black and white), color dreams are usually more prevalent. Dreams are perceived to be black and white because our brain isn't focused on color. Say you had a dream of being on a magic carpet. Most people would dream about the scenery, and thus, in color. Now say you were a fashion designer with the same dream. You would probably be more concerned with what shirt you were wearing, and thus, be dreaming with no color [information].

Now, when I say I don't dream, I mean that I don't dream *often*. I have had dreams, but they are usually once a month. And it is actually quite nice since I don't have to spend all of next morning trying to figure out what the hell my brain was doing.
