Ah yes, now I recall... I ran across that issue of forward compatibility not being a part of glibc, years ago, on Solaris.
...however all of the GNU/Linux packaging methods are terrible in one way or another...
Sad but true. But, for the most part, the truly critical feature of any software is that it works and is relatively stable. Not speed, efficiency, good structure or adequate documentation, can replace that "feature".
