DFArc's edit menu has an "uninstall selected DMOD" option that should remove any extraneous listings. Then again, it'll also delete your DMOD directory, so if you've only got one of those you might not want to do that. I'm not sure what would be causing it if that's the case.

I don't really know what you mean by "original front end." Back when I used to play (1998-2000) you either ran everything from command prompt or used one of a few unofficial frontends.

Sorry I can't be more help; I'm sure somebody else knows more about this than me.

I do know that if I rename the .dmod files to .tar.bz2, I can extract them manually using 7zip and just put the folders in manually. I have to extract them twice, however, to get at the actual files.

One problem that I had with Windows 7 and the dmod installer is that the User Account Control feature would interfere with installing the DMODs if Dink Smallwood was in the Program Files directory. I fixed this by giving my user account "Full Control" permission to the Dink folder, but that doesn't sound like the problem you're having if they won't even try to install when you open the .dmod file.
