if you talk to the duck (this is the one in the box) you get a line that specifically mentions beheading him. Tried just cutting his head off so he just ran about..that didn't work so I obliterated him.
The pillars mentioned are at the start of the long straight forest walk, right? That's where you end up as I interpret the poem. The duck is 'the offer'- a sacrifice. I counted a dozen song lyrics, first dodging the enemies cos it was easy either to have the duck killed or inadvertently kill it myself. I kinda knew I needed the duck to be alive. After I decapitated the duck I just went on a killing spree, choosing which ones to attack by going up/ down (the lines in the poem again, say this) to clear screens. It was a good way to power up. But it didn't help me solve it.
