And for those of us on Linux, it's ~/usr/share/dink/dink/Story (yes, the caps is required). However, SAVING it there's being a pain right now, since that's a root folder and requires root access to get to.

Skip the ~; that folder is, as you say, in the root fs, not in /home.

And you shouldn't save anything there. /usr is for system packages; admin changes should go to /usr/local (but freedink doesn't look there; perhaps it should), user changes to the home dir. And freedink does look there. You put dmods in ~/dmods/name; if you put your files there (under story/, with whatever caps it is written by the dmod), it works for that dmod. If you want the original game with cheats, the easiest (and proper) way to achieve this is to copy /usr/share/games/dink/dink (or without /games, depending on your system) to ~/dmods/dink and make changes to that copy.
