I didn't mean the books in the BookStore. I just meant random peoples' books. 
Also, you need to equip your fist to break the breakable rocks (herb boots will not do). In case you did this, you were just unlucky enough to not hit the correct rocks. The old man told you to go to a holy altar which was located under a tree. There are some books that will tell you where this altar can be found.
