I didn't get anywhere close to finishing Nier. Looked like there was going to be too much fetch-questery and the multitude of flaws stopped me going back to it. Once it came out the 360 it never went back in. Arik completed it though so I know about NG+.

I've barely scratched the surface of this game - only 11 hours played and I haven't even rung the first bell yet - but the sense of exploration and wonder is second to none. I can't think of a game that's drawn me into its world so fully since the Baldur's Gate series. Much like those games, I've gone into this extremely cold and discovering things for myself has been a joy. You feel like you are the first person to set foot in these environs, the first person to come across these enemies, the first person to find these items. It's a masterpiece in worldbuilding.

The online aspect is wonderful, even excluding the slightly dysfunctional summoning/invading aspects. Seeing ghosts fade in and out of your world is a fantastic touch, as is seeing the more fully-formed warriors setting off on their quests from Firelink. There are a multitude of other touches too and it's the most inventive use of online I can remember and it adds to the experience brilliantly.

The difficulty is punishing but never feels unfair. Enemies that were giving you great trouble when they were unknown quantities soon start getting cut to shreds once you learn how to combat them. Most deaths come down to your own impatience rather than unfair opponents. It's also the first game I've ever played that truly makes you feel like a small guy taking down a giant demon - You're so outmatched in most areas but can always triumph with knowledge, patience and the HEART OF A DEMON SLAYER!
