1024x768 should be the absolute minimum and I personally don't recommend it. If you can, make it at an optimum large size of 1600x1200 which can then be downscaled for various 4:3 monitors, and maybe another large one at 1920x1200 for widescreen users. Put them in a Zip file and everyone will love you for it.
