Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no good reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

Just curious if this is known and celebrated outside of the UK. What about you lot from Commonwealth places like Canada, Australia, NZ?

Not here we didn't. All the rush and tare was for the (bloody fantastic) Melbourne Cup(4th) and US Pressy elections!
AND, LEST I FORGET, we (pretend to, alas) remember the sacrifices of the ANZACs on the 11th.

Guy Fawkes night (aka fireworks night or bonfire night).

A group of people tried to blow up the Houses of Parliment and the king (James I?) with lots of gunpowder, about 400 years ago on the 5th of November. Guy Fawkes was caught red-handed next to the powder just in time.
So every 5th of Nov. is celebrated by bonfires and (lots of) fireworks. Why they tried to blow it up I'm not quite sure, a Catholic vs Protestant thing I think. Wikipedia's probably got an article on it.

Reguardless, NZ do celebrate it. We also, most definitely, celebrate ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Army Corps) day, which honors the fallen during the 1st World War when the two conjoined armies attacked Galipoli Peninsula, Turkey. Honor to the dead (dragon carcasss!!)
