How to fix WindinkEdit And WindinkEditPlus if it crashes before you do anything:
if this happens chances are your computer has low memory.
An easy way to fix this is to lower your resolution or bit depth, yes i know it might look like crap but you can just do it for editing.

If your computer has low amounts of memory free, changing the resolution or bit depth ain't gonna help a thing. Close memory intensive applications IF this was ever the case.

Since the problem fixes itself when you change your screen properties, the problem is obviously not a memory one.
