You need to have the amulet which you get from the scared guy in the cave at the top of the canyon of death - just right of the save machcine. Give him the jar of fertilizer and he gives you the amulet. This offers protection against the ghosts for 30 seconds. The best way to beat the enemies at the end is enter the screen only armed with your fist and then change to sword once the fight begins.
Make sure you've downloaded and install patch 11a.
