My poor computer has been attacked. And its attackers name is "smitfraud-c.toolbar888" I can not, for the life of me figure out how to get rid of this thorn in my side. I have run Norton, I have run spybot. Please would someone help a poor soul such as mine...

Well, depending on 'when' you got your nifty new friend,
my suggestion is too 'find files' created on such and
such day and delete anything by that name.Also I would
go into regedit and check the registry...ooo...or you could
restart your computer with your finger on the ctrl key which
brings up the list of options and then choose command promt
only and then type in scanreg/restore and then restore a
backup of your registry from before the problems started.
It sounds like it's spyware too, so maybe get a free spyware
remover program from download.com

P.S. I also just found this removal tool for that toolbar,
I'm pretty sure it's free...(they also give instructions on
how to manually remove all the toolbar in case you don't want
to download anything)

I found that same one and it is not free....not free at all...
But I did also find the manual instructions, but they confused me (don't laugh at my stupidity). Maybe if I could get a translator for these instruction i would be able to slay this mighty foe...

Run Adaware. If the problem still isn't fixed install firefox, and never use IE again.

I do run firefox, its just that it is affecting everything. popups are numerous, its slowing it down, its installing more and more spyware...I dont know the extent of actual harm its doing...but it is pissing me off

no...firfox is not the problem. The malware is messing with me through internet explorer and other ways... I tried Adaware and I will see if it works when I restart later...

The nice fellas at <a href="http://www.beepingcomputer.com">Beeping Computer helped me with my spyware problem. But fist run ALL of these over and ovre until they stop finding things, then post your HJT log in the HJT log section of the forum, rather strangly.
