Discussion : How do ya like 'em?
Revisiting an old discussion topic Arik made (it's been a looong time, and many new faces are at the DN) may seem silly, but I'd like to see what everyones views are nowadays.
How do you like your bosses? The kind that crumble after a few well timed punches, or the kind that will have you smashing keyboards in frustration?
Should they be short, sweet, and difficult? Or maybe long, drawn out slog-a-thon's?
Well?

I like my bosses to be half-decently smart, and not the dumbass's I usually get... Oh, you mean in the *game*!
I usually like them to be tough, but in theme.

I think they should be different, not just punching and throwing fireballs at them but to activate a switch and then a boulder drops on them or something.
It's always fun when they have some kind of special skills, instead of just having a little more HP and strength than the ordinary bonca. and they should be hard in a nice non stat-related way...
I would have to agree with Chaotic. The avg boss is just too easy these days. Anyone can hit a boss and run away before he hits you...over and over again...until he dies. It's a boss. It should be difficult. Look at some of the greats in the past. Do you think people went crazy playing Final Fantasy VII because Safer Sephiroth (the final boss) was easy? Nope. Not only should a good boss have what seems to be 10x Dinks HP, but he should also have extra abilities. Maybe even have him be able to dissapear for a short time...the BAM!! Pop up right behind you.
Edit: The only problem is you have to think of those who aren't skilled at Dink. But I say, "If you can't stand the heat, don't download the daggon DMOD!"
What sense of accomplishment is there in beating a game that has an easy boss?

Yeah, but if the boss gets too hard, then it gets bored to play within 5 tries or so!
Look at the Zelda bosses: they all have only one or two weak points and if you find it you only have a little time to really "hit" them. I like that.
A long high-stat boss is annoying, a low stat boss is boring and almost pointless.
I agree that it needs some tactic-- either like zelda's type that repeats in some pattern giving you only moment to damage it each time and possibly needing a combination of attacks to properly damage it, OR just some combination of attacks you have to pull off, OR some kind of defend enemy attack whilst you do something like stepping on switches or such, OR something completly original you think up.
Ppl can easily edit the game to give themselves lot's of potions when the boss is too high it's annoying so no matter how high the stats are, with a hit and run tactic the bosses are boring

Just take a normal monster and in addittion to having higher strength, defense, and hp give it something like magic, super-speed, or some sort of puzzle in battle that effects the match.

Is it possible to set up a hardness block around 80% of the boss so that you can only hit it from one angle. Then have that angle secure by some means that you have to destroy. And make the boss fast to make it harder. And after you destroy the thing that protects his 20% vulnerable side you hit him..then the barrier grows back for you to destroy again. That would make it challenging. And instead of giving him hp...make it a number of hits. As if the player hits the bosses vulnerable spot 4 times the boss dies. That way no matter how many str. potions the player cheats on it won't help. Magic wont work either.

But the point of stats is that if you can't beat something you can gain more to make it easier... And the best cheat is to increase Dink's speed or modify dinfo.c, anyway.

You can still cheat defence and magic (and other added stats). So you can be harder to kill even if you can't kill a boss in one or two shots
