The Dink Network

mp3 to wav using freeware decoder giving perfect quality but big file.

I guess there will never be mp3 support for dink so I'll have to use an alternative, because I hate to transform mp3 files into the "worst ever 8 bit" wav files.

The next eternal suicide chapter will contain about 10 mb mp3 files (no full songs just parts, effects, spells, maybe a little voice acting, ...).
I will include a small freeware decoder to transform them into wav files which can be used in the d-mod.

question 1 : Is it possible for dink to load those 10-20mb big wav files quickly enough ?
question 2 : Anyone left who has less than a 40 Giga harddisk. (files will take up between 100-200mb but you can immediately remove them after finishing the mod)

Possible or not ?

i really doubt anybody would download such a large mod, dial ups CANT download it, and using more than $20 worth of copyrighted songs is illegal

Yup like nobody downloaded Pilgrim's Quest which is almost 40mb. (mine will be half the size)
And what about the copyrights on midis, you think you can use them without permission ?
I'm sorry but using copyrighted midis = using copyrighted mp3s.
In general there are two copyrights on a MIDI -one copyright is that of the artist or the record company, the other copyright is that of the author who sequenced or programmed the MIDI.
Or am I wrong ?

even i wouldnt download a (files will take up between 100-200mb but you can immediately remove them after finishing the mod) and i think it said somewhere that you can use all of the midis and that stuff that came with the original dink as long as you gave them credit

Lol, in that case Nitronic I'll pop by your house with an empty CD-R .

P.S. With the source code release, isn't anybody thinking of making this option available?

Nitronic is saying that the files you download won't be 100-200mb, but it will take up that much space on your computer. I'm not personally worried about illegal mp3s myself because TDN is the last place that will be sued by the RIAA, they are much more interested in getting rid of Kazaa, which is a much bigger threat to the music business.

It's not that I'm going to use fileplanet to distribute the latest albums.
Just instead of using the midi version I will use its mp3 counterpart.(but still using midis for the majority of the mod of course)
There will be parts of real songs in it, but most of it is just "gamemusic".
The riaa ain't no threat for us, unless Kory is an undercover hunter , and besides: almost every released d-mod is "a copyrighted crime".
(midis, wavs, warcraft 2 graphics, internet gifs, ...)

ps: you download 20mb d-mod
you decode the mp3 files
10 mb = 100 mb wav files
end of story

christiaan, you are confusing me! wouldnt have bought half of your cds if you didnt have kazaa? kazaa is made to steal music and promote theft!

Ok, if you're going to discuss Kazaa and the RIAA and such, I suggest somebody make a thread in the off-topic forum. Then you can discuss it there without going all off-subject in this thread and having your well-thought out and intellectual arguments deleted.

As we are talking of legality, I repeat that there will not be any MP3 support, since encoding and decoding algorithms are patented. See http://www.mp3licensing.com/ for details.

However, the same idea can be applied to the free and better Ogg Vorbis audio format very well. We could extend it for D-Mod compression, and have a free utility transform JPEG and PNG graphics to BMP.

I'm a man, but I can change, if I have to.I guess.
Well, we could use Ogg vorbis instead, as it's not bound by any restricting patents. It's also, IMHO much better than mp3. I like to use .6 with it. You get at least 192 bitrate (mp3) quality, or better at .6, and it's only a half the size of a mp3 the same quality.

Oh, yes, and just so you know, mp3's don't like being converted to Ogg. If you do, try to convert 320 bitrate ones to about .5 or .6 and then check which one sounds better. You might get away with 256 bitrate or maybe, maybe, 192, but I personaly wouldn't waste my time with it. It's always best to rip from the CD. But you knew that, right? :/

Oh, yes, one last thing: If you do rip from the lower bitrates, do not be surprized if your filesize gets bigger than the original mp3, if you encode it at too high a level. I really don't know how to explain it in words how to explain it in words, (now there's a surprize), but it's not unexpected.

Oh, yes, I should stop saying, "Oh, yes," shouldn't I? Meh. I'm to tired. If you want more info go here: www.google.com and type in ogg vorbis. Yes, I am quite lazy, am I not?
