Warning: Spoilers Within

BoE seems to be a good, innovative, and absolutely frustrating D-Mod. I've had an enourmous amount of trouble attempting to play it without cheats, or using bugs as an advantage. But it doesn't seem possible.

For example, after you are sent on your main quest to go to the churches and steal the thingies, you go south and there are about a zillion screens of screenlocked, instantly-reappearing, speedy Priests. I tried killing them legitimately... but after dying 5 times I realized this wasn't working. I had 5 strength and 1 defense and I found the Gold Heart in the caves of the 2nd island... and there wasn't (to my knowledge) any easy way to level up. The pillbugs seem to have a respawn time of 10 minutes and don't give too much experience, so leveling up through them wasn't an option. So then I used the 'walk-on-water' trick on screenlocked screens to kill them without getting hurt (too much). So then I made it to the first dungeon...

I tried to go through it without cheating. I really did. I must have tried for about a half-hour, but I always died. So then I resorted to cheating my way through the dungeon, boosting my stats and refilling my life. And I still had a heck of a time trying to survive, and figure out the non-sensical passageways. So... going around one way makes a screen go to a new place, but coming from another direction doesn't? I'm still confused. And there is one screen with instantly-respawning Priests on the left, a barrier in the middle, and pillbugs on the right. A statue thing appears on the right when everything on the screen is dead... but because the priests instantly respawn, I couldn't find any way to get the statue without cheating.

So... am I the only one who is having trouble? Am I completely missing some vital element to the game that makes it possible (and fun) to play?

Nope, you're not, because I found it nearly impossible, too. I was also forced to cheat. One problem that just made me give up the d-mod was the boss priest, the fps was down to 14 making it impossible to fight him, and topping that, his stats were quite amazing, for my level 3 Dink. When I tried to kill him using ultimate cheat he responded, "You can't hurt me now!" And when I unlocked the screen and went to the left, I found a big crack and nothing else. Although, I had a lot of fun before this! The game is superb! (Next to the few flaws.) The way Dink changes into a fireball is quite a cool effect, and the story is also great. As for the screen changing under the church, I really have no idea

You guys are wussies. The game is certainly not THAT hard. You have to use a screenlock-cheat though, since otherways the game will occassionally lock up... I hate bugs.

Anyway, you said that A statue thing appears on the right when everything on the screen is dead... but because the priests instantly respawn, I couldn't find any way to get the statue without cheating.

Yes, I think that is a bug... So again, a screenlock-cheat is needed. But for any other cheats beside it, nah, they're not needed. The rock-boss is sorta amusing, since you have to push it into the fire so many times... but well, beginning of evil certainly hasn't been an extraordinarily hard dmod for me this far.
(I haven't played it through yet, I pushed the rock down onto the house and talk to the villains, but didn't feel like continuing playing... Not such a great dmod BOE is, but certainly the 2nd-best evil hero entry!)

Mmmm, pizza.
Start again and don't follow the path when going to the source. Go to the southernmost source. That one is real, and you'll have to kill a knight.
When talking to Anast again to kill the priests with the great tree, you'll have a stat boost of 5 strength, 3 defense and 1 magic (which isn't needed). Priests should be 2-3 times hit now
And... there are 2 gold hearts and 1 defense potion on island 2...

Respawning priests bug fix (remove s2-pill.d from the story and call this one s2-pill.c):

void main( void )
{
sp_brain(&current_sprite, 9);
sp_speed(&current_sprite, 3);
sp_exp(&current_sprite, 10);
sp_base_walk(&current_sprite, 410);
sp_touch_damage(&current_sprite, 5);
sp_hitpoints(&current_sprite, 15);
preload_seq(411);
preload_seq(413);
preload_seq(417);
preload_seq(419);
preload_seq(415);
say("No! More of those priests",1);
if (random(2,1) == 1)
{
sp_target(&current_sprite, 1);
}
}

void hit( void )
{
sp_target(&current_sprite, &enemy_sprite);
//lock on to the guy who just hit us
//playsound
}

void die( void )
{
int &hold = sp_editor_num(&current_sprite);
if (&hold != 0)
{
editor_type(&hold, 6);
}
&save_x = sp_x(&current_sprite, -1);
&save_y = sp_y(&current_sprite, -1);
}

Basically, this just adds a die(). Somehow I deleted it, don't know how.

(And if you got frustrated by level 1... just wait for the holes in level 2 MWUAHAHAHAHAHA)

The screen-change in level 1:
I say one thing: the screenchange is 'resetted' when entering the room south of the entrance, so if you ever get lost, go here and you can start all over again (not the heads of course).

I agree w/you!! I got soooooo frustrated that I quit playing. I got to the second church area and after falling about a million times, I found this a-hole full of flames that there is noooooooooo way to beat (even w/cheat). I cannot find a water spell or any more water period to possibly put him out so I can do battle. If anyone out there can help w/anything in this game, please respond

It is indeed an innovative d-mod. Too bad the repetetiveness is a little high, especially in the beginning. And of course the priests and random monsters in the wacky dungeon are quite frustrating.

Tsk tsk tsk... Why do you want to cheat? I assure you, all bosses are Gary-proof!!

You can't damage the fireboss when he moves fast, just arm your boots.
Also, he hasn't got any hitpoints, you must hit him about 9 times.
And finally: get some gold and buy some beef. Not all villagers are afraid!

The above codes from Majicman make absolutly NO sense to me! Anyway, I tried previously to figure out the basement under the 1st church (I can't make heads or tails out of it! I keep warping back to the last screen! Just how many of those heads am I supposed to aquire? Since then, I've started over from scratch and I'm just leveling up until I get some effective help with the fountain (the patches I installed aren't working). By the sounds of it, the worst is yet to come!

1. Copy the code he posted.
2. Go to the Dmod directory.
3. Open the story directory.
4. Delete s2-pill.d from the story directory.
5. Make a new file, call it s2-pill.c, and paste the code in it.
6. Tadaa.

Also, it's "Magicman". Unless "majic" is something you usually say.
